Probably wont happen with Rafa (who knows) but i really hope that we go with 2 up front, playing Mitro and Gayle. First of all we haven't really got a player that has shown how to master the #10 role for us, and with Mitro up front we'd have a focal point and he'd be able to bring others in to play with his hold up play. We'd also have an outlet forward when things get too tight in the middle of the pitch. It's early days but our attacks don't last long and more often than not we run out of options and lose the ball in midfield. Having him up front would make a massive difference.

Personally i've always liked the 4-2-3-1 setup but Gayle isn't perfect for it (yes he has scored goals). All of the Palace fans really like him and rated him, most of them thought that he could very very effective but not alone up front, never mind Pardwide. Like i said we don't have a #10 specialist, yes we have Diame but what he does in this role he could do from a CM position as well, maybe even better since he can do more of his runs when there's more space to run in to.

The thing is that when you play with an AMC the opposition usually drops a DM down to try and stop this player which means that Gayle is still alone against two CB's and not much space. Playing with another forward next to him, a strong target player like Mitro would force one of the CB to mark him tightly, and even follow him when he comes to meet the ball. This would mean that we'd break the oppositions defensive line and make them more uncomfortable as well as giving Gayle more space to take advantage of his movement and pace. As it is now he can't really be as effective because he can't make these runs as often as he could with us playing two up front, because now he has to play with with his back against goal to give our midfield more options.

Playing Diame in the role in front of our CM will be almost the same as us playing a central midfield 3. We'd just end up with one of the CM's serving no purpose forward or defensively, especially with the players we have available right now. Might as well replace that player by playing two up front which will give us more advantages in other areas and ways.

His biggest problem is he doesn't really know how to protect the ball.  The sending off against Spurs a prime example, in trying to get between the ball and the opposition player he launches in with a high boot which looks really bad when it catches the opponent.

Such a class moment.

The more I look at it the more it looks like that slip actually saved that supporter's life, as it looks like Mitro is about to chest barge right into him.

Really looking forward to his return. We are missing that physical presence up front. If he can shake the naughty stuff and keep focused on his performance he could really hone his ability and get scoring regularly. Him and Gayle should be very tricky together.

The reactions to a good majority if our fans to him coming back is slightly embarrassing tbh.  It's like we've got a 30 goal season striker coming back.

Is it? We have one striker right now (excluding Armstrong who probably will go out on loan). Personally i think he will do well for us  He will give us something else, another option.

People thought he was the answer last season to our problems, instead he was part of the problem.

Wouldn't say it is embarrassing as such, but generally agree. He's not shown nearly enough so far to warrant the excitement IMO.

Hopefully he has a good season.

That's why I said slightly [emoji38]. I just don't agree with how he's being introduced as some saviour to our whole team.

I think it's primarily due to him being exactly what we've missed in the opening games: a link from midfield to attack. Our gameplan is crying out for him, which as hinted in a previous post is probably intentional in preparation for his return.

Hope you're right. Needs to massively improve his finishing this season though.
