Let's be honest for a second, apart from Hatem (who did it twice) he's the first winger to get 4 goals in a Premier League season for us since 2006. That took him what, 11 games?

He's pretty much head and shoulders above the absolute crap we've watched out wide for a decade and he'll surely have a good PL career. You don't keep hold of players like that when you go down, unfortunately. Shame about the lack of loyalty but it serves us right.

I think everyone thinks along these lines really, it's just him going to Palace and Pardew that has people thinking he's a foolish fool.

palace offered him good money, get over it lads.

cant blame the boy, the premier league will always be a bigger platform than the championship.  if it dont work out for him at palace, i'm sure he would get another chance to move.

be in his shoes, he has nothing to lose by leaving nufc.

I think the concept of loyalty has changed somewhat over the years. I think once a player has moved for a fee to their 2nd club at the same level where there at, e.g. 2 Premier League clubs, he's never going to be 'loyal'.

For example, a youth team prospect who works his way into the first team and stays until a big money move comes in I'd still consider a loyal player, and also he'd be loyal to his new club provided he stays for many a year, or until his contract runs out. But if he makes a sideways move to another Premier League club, he'd just become a normal ("mercenary") player. For real life examples of this I'd say Michael Carrick, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Alan Shearer etc. I know it's all subjective, but to find truly 'loyal' players nowadays is hard. Money talks :/

There aren't really any mercenaries any more, it's the norm rather than the exception that players will have at least half a dozen clubs under their belts before they retire.

Reflecting on the move, Ritchie said: “If you look at the size of the football club it’s certainly not a backward step.

“The potential of this football club, the manager, the dressing room and the squad we have makes me feel sure it will be exciting times.

“There is a positive future for the football club.

“It is an unbelievable feeling to come to a club like this - it’s what you work hard for as a kid....

“You watch clubs like Newcastle on the TV growing up and it’s fantastic to be here and looking forward to the challenge.

“I loved it at Bournemouth, it was fantastic going there for the fans, staff and players.

“They had a massive impact on my career and I have to thank everybody.

But when a club like Newcastle come calling they are a massive football club.”

He gets it.

"I'm delighted to be here," said Townsend.

"Newcastle United is a fantastic club with great fans, a great stadium and great tradition.

"As soon as I heard Newcastle were interested in me, there was only one place I wanted to go so I can't wait to get started."

Most of them say much the same thing when they sign.

They do but they don't often drop a division to join a new club. If Chelsea came knocking then he might jump ship as well, but not for Palace I don't think.

  • 3 months later...

We went down with him, Wijnaldum & Sissoko as our attacking midfield.

No matter what you think of them, that's pretty fucked up.

I can forgive Townsend slightly for that as he only joined late January and still scored 4 goals - unlike the others who contributed little or nothing in the same period, and Sissoko with his one goal over the full season.

I don't get why anyone feels anything for the guy, he played for us for 5 minutes and we got relegated. Forget about him.

I liked him and generally wish him well, but won't care much either way how his carreer goes. Will just be a 'meh' footnote on our history in a few years.

I would have him back.  Hopefully Palace go down and we can sign him but I can't see that happening even with the King in charge considering their attacking options.

He can fuck right off. He made his bed, now he can lie in it. We'll see you next season son, on our way past you in the premier table.

Have to be a small man to dislike the lad.

Aye he was only here for a short period of time but he's probably the second best wide player we've had in a long time.

Glad he's back in the England squad.

I'll bet you're even more glad he's in a Pardew squad.

Yeah I was annoyed he left but I can understand it and at least when he left he did it professionally.
