Being really pragmatic and drawing all the emotional charge out of it for one second ((I'll be raging again afterwards, just a few seconds of calm.)) It's not the worst squad ever, as its being labelled, which is just unfair on those players. Just going to do a simple comparision to the one that I think is the worst squad we've ever had.

2014/15 vs 2017/8

((Trying to assume who's going to be first choice as best I can, based on what we've seen so far.))

Goalkeepers

Tim Krul > Rob Elliot

Rob Elliot < Karl Darlow

Jak Alnwick < Freddie Woodman

Defenders

Daryl Janmaat < DeAndre Yedlin

Mike Williamson < Florian Lejuene ((By f***ing miles.))

Fabricio Coloccini < Ciaran Clark ((Had a really hard time deciding this one, but just think Colo was past his best.))

Paul Dummett = Paul Dummett

Ryan Taylor < Javier Manquillo

Steven Taylor < Jamaal Lascelles

Massadio Haidara = Massadio Haidara

No one < Jesus Gamez

No one < Chancel Mbemba

((Just an opinion, but I think we're so much better in defence now.))

Midfielders

Jack Colback < Jonjo Shelvey

Vurnon Anita < Isaac Hayden

Cheick Tiote < Mikel Merino ((Sorry Cheicky. Just past your best by now.))

Mehdi Abeid > Henri Saivet

Moussa Sissoko > Mo Diame

Remy Cabella < Matt Ritchie

Yoan Gouffran < Christian Atsu

Sammy Ameobi < Jacob Murphy

Gabby Obertan < Rolando Aarons

Siem De Jong < Ayoze Perez

Strikers

Papiss Cisse > Dwight Gayle (Maybe. Though he was a liability that year and missed ten through suspension, Dwight might miss alot through doubting himself. Could easily go the other way.))

Ayoze Perez < Joselu ((Perez just wasn't a striker, hence being pushed out wide later on.))

Riviere < Mitrovic. ((He could spend all season out banned. His contribution would still be more than Riv's was.))

So yeah, In my opinion we've had much worse in the past. That team didn't win till October 18th, had one of the worst finishes I've ever seen and still stayed up.

To call this squad now "The worst we've ever had", as I've seen a lot on twitter today, just isn't fair on those players.

Okay, can stop being pragmatic now.

f*** off, Ashley.

Wijnaldum?

Also I'd argue that as Diame wont be starting its him vs either Hayden or Merino. I'd probably rate Merino higher (going off only one game) but jury is out with Hayden.

Otherwise I agree though.

My mate keeps telling me to relax about this whole situation and try and support the team just so we can instill some positivity. Like fuck I can relax, the very future of Newcastle United as an actual football club is at stake if Rafa goes.

I'm depressed :( Not just because of Deadline Day.. Why why can't we make the most of it when we finally have a great man and manager at the helm willing to stay for the long term and make this club what it should be.

I feel a lot more relaxed about things tonight. Not sure why like.

He'd have gone if yesterday truly was the final straw, I guess.

Glad the shitshow is over for a couple of months anyway, hopefully we can knuckle down and start winning a few matches.

I really don't. There is nobody better for this club than Rafa and they have fucked that. He would have rebuilt us and had us competing if them cunts had bought into it

Yep, Rafa can get on with working out how these average players can combine to win things. I have confidence in him doing that.

Long term we've got little to look forward to, but at least our players are more likeable now.

A good points return from the next 3 and the mood will be looking up again. This (Rafa being here) will always be a house of cards under Ashley, I've always thought he'd see the season out but after yesterday I'm worried if he'll still be here for the Burnley home game (on the deadline of January window).

I remember a great post by someone in the McClaren thread after Leicester beat us 0-3 at home, can't remember who it was but his point still stands: the Ashley regime has 2 more chapters, appoint a figurehead or sell up. He either wants a successful club () or he doesn't.  I believe Rafa is his chance. If he's forced out the whole thing will turn toxic  until Ashley sells up. Hopefully Rafa is still here before the Chelsea home game on the last day, and we have a new owner at that point.  We can only but hope.

He was never going to leave immediately, he's under contract and it would cost him £5m. He'll now be looking ahead to his next job, and he'll probably not be planning to be here next season whereas before this summer he definitely was. He'll do his best while he is here though, he's a proud man.

It's the only reason why he hasn't walked already but is a certainty to be away once a club of some stature comes in for him and they will in the not too distant future either. It's gone beyond affinity with the supporters now (as some think this will keep him here this season it won't) and not a chance he won't be away with the first decent opportunity becoming available. Think some of our fans are living in dreamland if they think he will be here in the near future never mind the end of the season.
