They (and I would probably say most of the premiership teams) are now thanks to the Ashley and his muppets as they certainly weren't before he bought the club. Which is nothing impressive. One good season pretty much, twice relegated, involved in relegation battles more times on top of that, never competed for a trophy. Never even close. Very true shows how s*** he was that I got his name mixed up and you suspect but that's speculatiion and they still chose us. I agree the early seeds were being sown by Shepherd but Ashley has taken into to a different level - so much so that I would say at least 75% of the clubs in the premiership are a more attractive option for players than we are currently. We had high revenue compared to Everton and platitudes aside, came across as a big club. We got Rafa Benitez to manage us in the Championship so I dont think its entirely unrealistic to challenge f***ing Everton for Sandro Ramirez. Again... its all down to how we are sold as a club.
