Norwich apparently want £16 million for Murphy, scratch that one off

Or we could try negotiating a realistic price. We offered £8m, they want £16m. Somewhere in the middle would probably get the player. If we were serious.

Pretty sure we'd be able to get him for £10-£13m.

Is that our problem though?  A club potentially names a price a deal will get done at.  Despite there being the most money there has ever in the PL and at the risk of our world class manager being extremely unhappy we'd rather f*** about for the sake of 3/4 million to get the "best deal".  We p*ss about and get no one

Aye. Our problem is the slowness in which we operate. If Norwich have said they want £16m, we should be straight back in there with a £10-13m offer. If that gets rejected too, then I'd probably go and pay the £16m but we seem to drag it out over days/weeks.

If he's got real potential then he'll be worth way more than that after a few years working under Rafa.  The way the transfer market is inflating he'd probably be worth more than that next year anyway thinking about it.

We should have the Tobin money available too, right?  That should be paid this summer iirc.

Fuck this thread is depressing and rightly so.  I appreciate prices are mental but that is the reality of the situation at the moment and we seem to be chasing value/cheap signings or pissing about over nominal amounts of money to get things done.  Value is a relative thing when we loose our manager and place in premier league chasing cheap deals.

I am not a fan of paying over the odds for the sake of it but we have to invest, it is a simple as that.

Probably be something like charnley not having a clue how to close a deal without Carr by his side.

Rafa should just oversee the whole thing start to finish. All these suits just slow the process down.

It's not Charnley, this is all trickling down from Ashley. If  the will is there to get deals done we'd already have a few more players in. There was no problems getting players in this time last year, so what's changed?

There's no doubt we're very much suffering the effects of horrendous transfer windows gone by. We've bought so much utter shit, it'd be an absolute miracle if anyone wanted to take the likes of Riviere off our hands. All those returning loanees did fuck all on their travels last year so it's going to be difficult/impossible getting em shifted.

Prices have gone up due to the amount of TV money flooding into club coffers. Our budget has stayed the same meaning we are restricted to buying either less players of genuine quality or if we want quantity, go for the cheap and nasty volume option.

Rafas getting pissed off with the way those above him are doing (or rather not doing) business. Not because fees have gone up. Everyone knows transfer prices have gone up, but so has the amount of tv money we get for being in the Premier League. Huddersfield must be on their way to bankruptcy the way they've been spending in that case.

Our average spend under Ashley is £4 million a year we've already spent more than that this year

Forgetting about the Pardew era (if only) and Carver (can't recall a signing), in the last four windows we've seen:

Summer 2015, Wijnaldum, Mitrovic, Mbemba, Toney, Tobin: c£49m

Winter 2016: Saivet, Shelvey, Townsend: c£30m

Summer 2016: Sels, Gayle, Ritchie, Gamez, Hayden, Hanley, Clark, Diame, Yedlin, Murphy, Lazaar: c£58m

Winter 2017: zilch.

Summer 2017: Atsu, Lejeune £14.9m so far.

I haven't included loan signings etc. So if we're purely using an average 'spend' we should see at least another £25m spent this Summer. Though given the context, and despite the frustrating lack of activity, I'm still expecting another £50m+ to be spent this Summer.

Just wondering why you ignore a very long period of non-spending and focus on two unique events to inflate this average?

Charnley blew his load on McClaren, and chased bad money with good trying to save his boy. And then we were forced to spend to get back at first time of asking. edit: not to mention recouped a lot of that with the fleecing of spurs for Sissoko etc.

Pretty much the fact he had Carr to hold his hand through deals is what I think. No Carr sat there to help him through negotiations, and if he's a poor negotiator with demand for player's rising and a tight budget that could explain a bit? Its a fucking queueing process. Should just be Rafa direct to Ashley.Fuck all these little suits stealing a living.

You mentioned about Huddersfield spending. That will be down to the clubs outgoings overall being relatively small. Plus they will need a squad to compete, they had a fair few players on loan last season who will have returned leaving a smaller squad to try to stay in the division.

Last couple of years seemed most relevant and we're all anxious about how much we'll spend; not what we'll eventually recoup. That said, I didn't know about the 'special' ( :fwap:) relationship between Lee  & :rose: Shteve; that obviously biases the whole comparison.

Where is Odin's latest theory on why we don't have to worry and things are OK?

We've been waiting until the third kit was launched.

We've been waiting until Ashley's court case was finished.

We've been busy watching Wimbledon/Love Island/Good Morning Britain [delete as applicable].

The first two instalments of the P/L payments could yet cover Ashley's court costs.  Easily done with cash 'diverted' to an 'agent' for an unknown Forrin.  :coolsmiley:

Call me crazy, but I think we might actually get linked with someone today, and if we make it past the afternoon denial reports, then we could actually see us monitoring someone by the weekend. This time next week we might even see us weighing up some offer. Stuff of absolute dreams this waiting for July.

Afternoon denial, we will be lucky if not denied by 9 o'clock for any that come through ?
