He was having a really poor game and nothing was coming off for him. We've had plenty of wingers in the past who have gone into hiding  when they've been having games like that but he kept on going, made one then scored one and all of a sudden everything started happening for him. Full credit to him for that. Clearly he's got a very strong mentality which is extra pleasing considering some of the cowards who've pulled the shirt on in recent years.

the right DNA i'd imagine

Newcastle United hero Matt Ritchie found himself under the microscope of the national media following his sparkling performance against Preston North End.

The flying winger left the field to a standing ovation and had the crowd chuckling with his antics ahead of a second half penalty when he shoved the ball under his jersey in front of the Gallowgate End.

After spending the last few seasons attracting negative coverage from the media, the mood was upbeat when he spoke to Jim White on Talksport the day after the 6-0 win over North End. Here’s a summary of what he said:

So can Newcastle REALLY win the EFL Cup?

Ritchie replied: “I’d be disappointed with myself if I said we couldn’t win it. If we can have a little bit of luck, why not?

“(We need) a good mentality. A little bit of luck along the way - we’ve performed well so far but to have a good cup run, you need some luck.”

What was going on during the penalty incident?

Ritchie replied: “I’m the penalty taker! Mitro is a striker, everyone wants to score as many goals as possible.

“I’ve been on penalties since Dwight missed one early doors.

“I wasn’t going to give it up. Mitro is a great lad.

“He’s bubbly, lively, he’s great to have around the place.

“He’s a top striker and when he plays, he’ll score goals for sure.”

Things have changed so much in the last 12 months haven’t they, this time last year Newcastle lost 3-0 to Sunderland?

Ritchie replied: “It was a fantastic result.

“People are talking about how many good players we’ve got - but people can step in and do a job for us.

“It’s brilliant at the moment.

“A big reason for me wanting to come here was the support of the fans and they were brilliant.”

What’s it like working for Rafa Benitez?

Ritchie replied: “It’s brilliant.

“The trust that you put in the manager is massive.

“When he’s giving you details - we got into games with clear game plans and the shape.

“We prepare whether they’re playing a five or four - there’s no stone left unturned.

“It’s clear what you need to do.”

He was there best player in their last qualifier wasn't he? Got something like 4 assists?

They've played 2 games since then and got poor results before last night. And Snodgrass got a hattrick that day so he probably their best player

Anyone else been disappointed with him for the majority of the season? Considering the price we paid for him and his record for Bournemouth, I can't really remember him making a major impact in any game.

Has his role changed much for us from what he was doing at Bournemouth?

The odd flash here and there but I expected better in all honesty, especially as he was utterly dominant the last time he played in this league.

He was utter gash today and capped it off with an awful miss.
