I think it's the whole thing. Those that have come back, those that won't make the leap, those that have gone and got lost. Looking at the squad for this game and basically the whole lot is MLS based.

Now the MLS is perhaps a good system for football in the US giving past failed leagues, and as much as I hate it I can totally understand why it is the way it is. But if you have this structure and salary cap there needs to be an acceptance that this structurally restricts the level and limits the potential of players. Even with an improved youth program, the aim has to be on jettisoning players to Europe ASAP.

Sunil Gulati is the most culpable here, hiring Arena simply because he "knows CONCACAF,"  employing only nine full-time scouts to watch talent from a massive nation, among so many other systematic things wrong with USSF. Arena's post-match quotes about not making big changes are damning, too, there was no way he can be k.ept on.

Unless Gulati goes I’d don't expect anything substantial to change. Arena will go but they’ll make some wildly uninspiring pick to replace him. Kreis, Vermes, Porter, some politically safe pick but certainly no one who’s ever been tested on the world stage.

Some of the goals in those games. Panama’s equaliser didn’t go in and the Honduras equaliser has the bloke miss a sitter against the bar comes back out and smacks off Ochoa’s bonce to fly in.

Probably cost Fifa a fortune in advertising revenue too which is always nice.

Well at least it avoids some unnecessary off field drama between the US and the hosts next summer. But how bad can you be not to get out of that qualifying zone. Losing to Trinidad itself was so pathetic seeing the opposition were bottom of the pile.

Based on the FIFA rankings it looks like the pots for the World Cup draw might end up being

Pot 1 Russia, Germany, Poland, Portugal, France, Belgium, Brazil, Argentina.

Pot 2 Spain, England, Italy/Croatia/somebody else, Switzerland, Colombia, Uruguay, Peru, Mexico

With Brazil and Argentina not being allowed to play Colombia, Uruguay or Peru, there's a big chance England might end up in of their groups.

Just saw the US result - I checked Argentina early in the morning but I took US' qualification for granted and didn't bother to check the TNT game.  What the hell happened?

Short story: poor player/tactical selection, poor play, terrible field conditions, opponent who wanted it more

Long story: culmination of half a decade or more of program mismanagement

Terrible field conditions is no excuse at all to lose to that kind of side. Did you see the state of the pitch in the Bosnia v Belgium game and that wasn't deemed an excuse because Belgium dealt with it
