If he was younger, on this seasons form, would he be pushing for an England place ?

Nope. As much as I love him. As the previous post highlights he has his limitations.

He's outperformed Gordon this season IMO.

Murphys defensive output has been better and he's been a key reason why Isak is scoring.

Gordon will always be the better player because when a game is tight Murphy struggles with close control and quick passing, he's also got softer mentality.

That's not to shit on Murphy though, he's absolutely key to us right now.

I never ever would have thought the same but Gordon has been really frustrating/crap the past half a dozen games.

Even if we spend £50m on a new RW, there’s no guarantee that he’ll be as productive as Murphy. Hopefully we get someone who’s better at controlling the ball and dribbling than Murphy so we can show teams a different look, especially in games against the top teams where we don’t have the majority of possession. But against weaker teams, Murphy has been very good, it’s hard to be more productive.

Murphy is arguably better against teams where there will be space in behind to use his pace and not be expected to break down deep defences and control and move the ball in tight areas.

He was decent and effective against Liverpool. But I feel the Leicester game was the turning point for his season. He was brutal the first half hour or whatever it was. Then bagged a brilliant goal and a second. Unlucky not to get a hat trick and once they opened up. He looked like he’d score or assist every attack

Bar the odd blip. He’s not really looked back since.

Gordon has 11 goal contributions in 13 matches since the Liverpool 3-3, if that's crap, I want to know what's good

I don’t think it’s 6 games, Rod. I didn’t see yesterday. But I thought he was bad against Wolves and he was one of our worst performers against Bournemouth.

Still bagged in one of those games, mind and got an assist yesterday

I do find him one dimensional and frustrating as a player. More than likely by design with him staying high and not wanting to burn him out. But his defensive work and recovery runs have disappeared out of his game.

Just glad I’m not the lone voice in the Jacob Murphy fanclub anymore. Those that know… know

He may not always execute what he wants to do but he see’s it which I’ve always thought is the main thing and the confidence he’s gaining is allowing him to attempt what he sees and the more he attempts the more he accomplishes what he wanted.

Weirdly with his physical build he could have a similar latter career to Giggs if he keeps progressing and producing. One of those types of player that doesn’t lose a yard until very late in their careers. Obviously not comparing the players overall as that would be silly.

Second guessing has always been his problem. He's an intelligent lad, but historically hasn't been intelligent enough to stop thinking, if you see what I mean. But we aren't seeing any of his dithering now, he pretty much knows what to do before he's even received the ball nowadays, which lets the quality of his technique shine through.

I mean if he was, say 22/23. Looking at recent England squads and the options for wide right haven't had great seasons.

Don't agree at all. Even yesterday when Gordon wasn't at his best output wise, his ability to spin and find pockets of space when he had three opponents closing in got us out of trouble and put Southampton on the back foot.

This is where the close control is really important, and where players like Bruno who have got it, are priceless. Murphy's end product has been fabulous this season, fair play to him. But I still want someone like Gordon on the right side to replace him, I just think our football will end up being that much better.

You didn't read it all clearly.

I've pretty much word for word said the same.

Might just be the wording of your first sentence which threw me then. I think outperformed is subjective for the reasons I gave.

He´s been great! Used to think he was beyond hopeless. Another Howe MasterClass in coaching. Well done to the lad!

Howe deserves massive credit in believing in him tbf. He obviously saw his raw attributes and has worked on getting him to deliver on those. He's had a couple of cracking long range shots with his left foot which have rattled the woodwork in recent games. Didn't even realise he had that in his locker until this season.

I'd be very excited to see how Howe could develop a younger player with a similar profile to Murphy. Seems like the ideal winger profile to compliment Isak/Gordon and for how he wants to play.

Let's face it, whether you rate him as a player or not, everyone loves Jacob Murphy.

When he retires we should hire him to the important backroom position of Head of Being Jacob Murphy.
