My thoughts are less-so about Mbappe.   There will come a critical mass moment but it will require Saudi keeping this up for a decade.

I don’t think Mbappe joins them. But if Saudi keep chipping away at it. Fill the league with ASM and Neves quality of players.  Then suddenly Diaby takes the offer.  The Fulham manager takes the job.  The next Mbappe joins.  Then the world has to respect the teams.  Then they can start their own International Super League to run alongside European leagues.

A super league is inevitable. But it doesn’t have to be European.  Or European only.

Much like what they’re doing with us. This could be a decade(s) long project.

Because they haven’t given us hundreds of millions to spend? FFP wants a word..

Realistically though, the Saudi League is their priority. Doing what they are doing is a major geopolitical goal for them and I’m not sure how Newcastle could ever come before the political goals of another nation.

Saudi Arabia has no personal income tax:lol:

Though foreign nationals apparently pay 20% flat rate.

Don't know if true but someone told me that if a foreign national has a contract under 3yrs its 20% and over 3yrs is tax free.

Competitive. Rich people are dickheads.

Very close to posting "I wanna be a dickhead" but thought I might crash the site as everyone piles on.

No… because like you said, they have another footballing priority.  Doesn’t mean that won’t try and do all they can. But NUFC has a limit.

Don't think it matters much in the grand scheme. The only time I really hear about Mbappe is in the summer transfer windows and only time I see anything of him is if there's a major international cup going on. If he goes to SA he'll become even more irrelevant. The model they are implementing isn't sustainable, and think they'll scrap their plans within 5 years leaving the only people happy being the handful of players who managed to milk them for as much money as possible during this period.

We've always been an investment in a vast portfolio for them. We'll still be a priority.

Why not? UEFA's thirst for cash is limitless.

They're not stupid though, it'd would be a very daft thing to do in the long term.

Not to mention politically dodgy as fuck.

UEFA won't let it happen because they'll realise it's an existential threat to put Saudi teams into European competition (not to mention ethical questions, which i am sure will come to the fore, but they're not going to do anything to jeopardise the $$$).

It's not in anyway a geographical question.

Its the opposite actually. Ask the PGA how that worked out.

For those that dont know the background. PIF just wanted to be involved, get some recognition (and btw thats all they want, respect. Money they already have). PGA told them to fuck off. Several times. PIF went and created LIV and now they own their ass - its an embarrassment how poorly it was managed.

if UEFA is presented with a viable option to include PIF, share in the money, and keep them as minority players then they should do it. Because if PIF gets told to fuck off they will find a way to destroy UEFA or take it over.

I think it’s already too late.

Buying us was that ‘being involved’ part. But as soon as we were bought, the already tight rules were tightened.  And the direction of travel is to prevent NUFC becoming a force.

Now if they persist.  They’ll create a number of super teams for their league.  Then they can start inviting elite European clubs for competitions. The elite clubs already want a super competition.  UEFA will have to bend the knee but I don’t think it will be for KSA teams to join the CL. Saudi will want to own the competition primarily.  A new one (maybe even two) elite club competition.

Do people not know that Israeli teams play in UEFA competitions, as well as the national team? The door is definitely not closed on Saudi teams joining.

I genuinely think a lot of people don’t know that Israel is not in Europe. Ashkenazi people are largely European ancestrally too.

Agreed, there was an interview not long ago where the UEFA president laughed at a question about being concerned with what Saudi Arabia is doing. That's a dangerous attitude to be sharing openly.

The one thing that may keep the Saudis at bay is FIFA clearly wants to elevate the Club World Cup and Saudi Arabia's end game (presumably) is to host a World Cup, so they need to keep FIFA on their side (not to mention the pull UEFA has with FIFA). There's no doubt going to be some interesting backroom dealing happening here. Saudi Arabia (and potentially other non-European nations / confederations) conspiring with FIFA to make the Club World Cup bigger than the Champions League seems like one potential path.

This Mbappe deal (if it happens) will be the last straw for UEFA. They will need to do something quickly to stop their precious Champions League assests from leaving.

It's not going to be long now until FFP gets scrapped. Which obviously would be great news for us and 7 other teams in the Prem but not so good for the other 12.

Not sure like. Wolves and Everton would be better off without FFP you'd imagine.
