Rafa Benítez (now unemployed)

He would be mad to stick around. Having said that, in a perverse way, he loves the political side of football and likes the challenge of making others see the light or way, his way. Mad loveable bastard :D

Benitez has 18 months left on a contract that includes a clause stipulating he – or a poaching club – must pay a £6m compensation fee should he resign before entering the final 12 months of the deal.

:mysterysolved:

So, were stuck with him for the rest of the season at least.

I think i'm having a brain fart but if Rafa signed a 3 year deal in May 2017, how can he only have 18 months left in January 2018.

He signed it 2016.

Can't see why he'd sign any new deal anyway, so the whole prospect is moot.

he'll not sign a new deal/extension and Ashley will view it as a snub and sack him saying he's not committed...

Criminally underfund your world-class manager and then expect him to do you a favour by signing a contract extension :mackems:

Even better, they were using him as selling point to prospective buyers of the club.

“If we have the players to attack, we attack,” said Benitez. “But you have to defend against the best team in the country, you have to defend.

“We’re not Liverpool, we’re not Arsenal. We don’t have five players who will win a game on their own. Managers have to manage in the way they have to manage.

“My first game with Extremadura was against Barcelona – we lost 1-0, but we played 4-4-2, we pressed high, the difference between that and now is massive. The gap between the best teams and the rest is bigger. There is a massive difference between the rest and the top six.”

A part of me admires the absolute colossal balls they're sporting

Maybe if they were serious about keeping him, which they absolutely won't be. Ashley will know fine well that Rafa isn't going to sign a new contract after being pissed about, but no harm in trying eh?
