That figure includes £30m in onerous contract provisions, essentially for those players no longer considered part of first-team plans but who are still employed by the club, as well as promotion bonuses.

And that's the main point to consider when looking at the salaries figure. They've essentially brought forward £30m of future salaries costs and dumped it into this financial year inflating the 'accounting loss'

Also worth noting that in cash flow terms we've lost £25m in the year, which is more of a 'real world' figure to look at.

so what they've accounted for paying all of the salary costs for certain players up front in last years accounts, is that what you mean?

Basically. Essentially said Tom, Dick and Harry are no longer part of the first team squad, their contracts are therefore onerous and they've provided for all future costs of those contracts in this financial year. Means they're accounting for full cost of them, regardless of whether they manage to get them off the books in the future, in this accounting period. They'll not have not actually paid out any of that £30m in cash though.

that is fucking diabolical like, absolutely ridiculous

They basically knew they would take the gamble as in the future I believe they will benefit from tax free profits to the tune of the 50m loss which is apparently what Rafas budget would be this summer.

Its nothing too bad as they are using the accounting rules to the benefit of the club.

Take out that £30m and promotion bonuses our wages still increased after a season in the championship, that is shambolic management of the finances.

Not particularly surprising. Had a higher volume of players coming in, even if we shifted a few big earners. Plus Rafa and his team will be on substantially more than the jokers before him.

Relegation clauses for those that stayed though?  Although wouldn't surprise me if they forgot to add them in again.

Wasn't it pretty well publicised at the time that Shelvey, our highest earner, didn't?

If anybody wonders what RTG make off all this, here's a glimpse...

Mackem 1 - Ashley is a very successful businessman and whilst he pisses them off, I can't say he's ever made a bad business decision in relation to NUFC.

Mackem 2 - I would kill to have him running our club.

on that wages thing though that reduces the wage bill going forward by £30m though right, you can't account for such things twice?

Aye. Plus they'll have to release it back as a credit if they manage to shift anyone they've previously provided for.

They also alluded to payments for the sales of players being staggered (we knew about the Sissoko deal structure) so some more of that cash will be coming back in too.

this is no surprise to anyone though, you can sell 2 players for £55m but you're only likely to get £11m per season back or whatever it will be...as dave said it's ashley's own insistence on this bullshit that's the problem

This cashflow shortfall, by not receiving a large lump sum (in a single season), and insisting on paying for all incoming players in full conveniently relegates us to the bargain bin (in comparison to what other clubs are spending on a single player) by default.

It's disgusting.

Also the biggest bullshit is all this does is explain last years situation. Fair enough, if you're being very lenient you can now see why we only were able to spend 30 odd million. (Still bullshit.) But there's been a year of PL money since then.

Our club is comically ran, how on earth Charnley is in such a position shows what a clown Ashley is.
