Even with Cattermole and Rodwell etc eating up wages they will still have a wage budget that will dwarf every team in that league.

Complete guesswork.

Could as easily have just been bought by a consortium who’s major investor owns Eastleigh.

It's not complete guesswork.

Clubs in League One can only spend a maximum of 60% of their overall annual turnover on wages. Sunderland's turnover is 5 or 6 times most clubs down there, and 10 times in terms of some of the smaller teams, and they have the added bonus of being able to spend 75% of their income on wages as a relegated club from the Championship.

Realistically based on the current contract situations it's only Cattermole and Rodwell who will be sitting around eating into the wage bill, leaving them a huge amount relatively to spend on building a team. League One clubs don't spend on transfer fees, which means they can outbid all the other sides down there for players in terms of wages. Unless Birmingham go down as well, they have no realistic rivals of a similar size.

The only hope there was for them struggling down there was if they got stuck being unable to sell the club and were saddled with the debt. That's gone now and they have a whole summer to prepare. They will absolutely piss it.

So you think they will do well by throwing large wages at players who only want to go to Sunderland for the money? Isn't that what's gotten them into this hole in the first place?

I'm being slightly tongue-in-cheek mind, obviously having some financial clout is a benefit. I'm just cautioning that it's hardly a guaranteed route to success.

No. They don't need to throw around huge money at all. The average League One player is on 2k a week ffs.

Are they? 4 or 5 years ago maybe.

These new owners will not have the required money to invest what is needed to take them back to the Premier League which will cost tens of millions no doubt and maybe even more. Just look at what Villa have spent and Wolves. The Championship is only going to get even more competitive year by year. At least with Short they had someone who could afford to invest if he so chose, it’s only this season where he has decided against that. I’m convinced these new owners are in it because they’ve picked up a club for next to nowt and will try and flip it over if they get back into the Championship. They will spend some money, but not enough to get them back up automatically and within a season.

Imagine if they got someone even worse man, an absolute chancer who just wants a club with a big stadium but has no money or knowledge of running a club of that size. Sure Eastleigh provides all the experience.

If it’s a consortium of people they will be looking at an exit strategy and getting a few quid more on top of what they’ve put In. Minimal investment/maximum return. I can see this ending badly just from a business perspective.

They're getting very excited about a deal which is essentially giving their club away to a bloke with a mediocre record in non league football.

At least Short had enough money to cover the operational losses and they won't be going away any time soon.

fair to say they've took that tweet pretty well, judging by the replies

The consensus on RTG is that Jordan knows what he is talking about as he consistently slates us.  Let’s see if that holds up...

It sounds to me like people with not much money will be taking over a club that will probably make large losses for the next few years, it could be a disaster for everyone involved. I'm making assumptions though.

The consortium will have their eyes on the Premiership riches, and may consider that worth the investment over the next two or three seasons.

But if they get there, then what. It'll still be a struggle to stay there. And if they get in trouble, a consortium is more likely to put them into administration than wipe out the debt.

Surprised if people are genuinely disappointed that they have/are about to be sold. Firstly, change of ownership is risky, could just as well be out of the frying pan into the fire and we’d hardly be thrilled with the Peckham International Trading Company ‘portfoilo’ (Oxford, Eastleigh, Sunlun) if they were buying us. Secondly, they are going to be in the third tier, man. Again. Who cares and good luck to them. They’re irrelevant.

A consortium which is treading water with a club in the conference with a shitty 2k seat stadium have suddenly become ambitious?

It doesn’t add up.

The fans will think this is their new dawn but once the realities set in that they’ve lost a very wealthy owner who could easily have kept them as a stable PL club if he wasn’t clueless.

This new crowd? They’ll try to run it sensibly but what if they don’t get out of League 1 first time? It seems like a massive gamble for a group that could be in way over their heads.

Ellis might also have deferred payments on the debt if the club meet certain conditions (i.e PL money)
