The rumour is now relegation is official and as short can't give the club away due to the massive amount of debt they will enter administration. They are hoping to take a 10 point deduction for this season while clearing the decks for league one.

Deduction will count towards next season, so that info is incorrect.

Not allowed after southampton and leeds tried the same.

Aye, changed the rules to stop just that

Leeds United filed for administration with only a few days remaining in the 2006–07 season, which automatically triggered a 10-point penalty. This placed Leeds at the bottom of the table and relegated the club, but they were extremely likely to have been relegated anyway. By entering administration during the 2006–07 season, they hoped to avoid starting the 2007–08 season on −10 points. The following week, Boston United entered administration in the final minutes of a defeat to Wrexham which ensured they were relegated to the Football Conference, meaning they likewise avoided starting the following season on -10 points (though they would find themselves being double-relegated to the Conference North for unrelated reasons). The Football League saw both cases as clubs trying to exploit a loophole, and changed the rules. From 2007–08, any club entering administration after the fourth Thursday in March would have their 10-point deduction suspended until the following season. If the club is relegated the points will be deducted from their tally at the start of next season. If the club stays up the 10 points will be taken off their final total.

Parachute payments will surely go towards servicing debt and towards operating costs anyway? I think they are fucked. If they don’t start next season we’ll, they could implode.

SBC’s loan is secured against the PP. it’s gone as soon as it comes in.

It's still turnover though which means it'll inflate their salary cap above the other L1 teams whether they keep it, spend it, pay off debts or whatever.

A very feint silver lining, especially when they’ll still have 15 or so players all earning more than the highest paid league one player...some of them doubling the current earner, in fact rodwell will be nearing 3 times that, even with a 40% pay cut. Ouch.

Ps: short is apparently having to put in £500kpw to keep them afloat. When consortiums are trying to club together £60m to buy the club and struggling, then finding another £24m a year in its current state to keep it going is a no go and why talks have stalled. They might have a higher wage cap, but the club won’t be in any position to use it.

They're going to have to have one helluva rebuild, too. This is their squad:

No idea if the four currently out on loan have contracts up this summer but they have to find a way to get rid, given the wages they'll be on - either releasing them or accepting whatever the fuck they're offered. Rodwell's also milking them dry.

They'll be paying Oviedo, Clattermole, O'Shea, McGeady and Kone a pretty penny too.

On top of that, I can't see the likes of Jones, McNair, LuaLua, McManaman, Watmore, Maja and Asoro fancying sticking around for League One football either.

I'm sure talk at the time was that a fee of £8m had been agreed for N'Dong at the end of the season, and he would be going.

6 players on loan themselves... but I'm sure Lua Lua was also only on loan?

Just an option iirc, he’s never played for Watford and doesn’t get on the bench currently.

Didn't realise Ndong hasn't played a single minute for Watford. Sunderland's transfer dealings have been so bad in recent years

Be lucky to shift him in the summer. Another loan, probably to France and covering a large amount of his wages will be the best they can do with him.

Lens & Borini are agreed so will leave. They got to shift kone, khazri and dodgybodi asap while hoping they can come to some agreement to release rodwell. If they can give cattermole away they’ll have done well.

Ah right. Sure the talk (about N'Dong) on Totalsport at the time was that it would be permanent in the summer. Another surprise for them then.

Just looked and Kazenga LuaLua joined them on a free from Brighton, but only until the summer... so he gets to escape.

What's the craic with Rodwell - has he given up on playing for the club and is just therefore happy to draw his wages?

Essentially.

Thanks for clarifying the situation people. Administration is a real possibility and probably the only way forward for them.

Unlikely as Short would kiss goodbye to the parachute money they got coming in..

It's quite shameful really. As a professional, you'd think he would want to play and therefore put that ahead of wages. Wasn't it Winston Bogarde who did a similar thing at Chelsea? :(

As it would need an owner of man city type to clear the debt they don't have a lot of options. Sunderland are proper f.....

Happy to organise a plane to fly over us but no desire for anything actually productive for their club.

How big is their loan to the 3rd party? Would the parachute payment/player sales (lol) cover it?

Surely Ellis will either have to take a hit himself or just go in to admin now.

This time next year will be the most likely time for administration with only a minimal PP left to come in. If they don’t get everyone on over 10k a week out the door this summer it’s a real possibility.
