Toon1892
Played well against Birmingham. Two assists and they struggled to deal with him when he got near the byline. Gave the ball away twice which I know the majority of fans will get excited about but the two important assists make up for that.

TheBrownBottle
Perfectly capable PL midfielder - his greatest weakness was always the time he takes on the ball. This isn't laziness, more a slowness in decision-making - it is what stops him from being a really good PL midfielder. I'm happy he's here as a squad midfielder - he's not as good as Bruno or Tonali; but at the moment very few are. It would cost us 20m+ to bring in a replacement of guaranteed similar PL capability - and he's one of us (and a HG player). Why the urge to get rid? If the lad is happy to stay, then unless we get an unrefusable offer then we should embrace him.

Maggies
Definitely a confidence player. I think he still has a role to play in the squad where you need someone for last 20 minutes to run around a bit. Unfortunately heās not technically strong enough for where we want to get to. Feels like we have higher priorities to sort out this summer rather than Longstaff replacement, unless a decent bid for him comes in.

Kid Icarus
I could live with him coming in and doing a job if he fixed either the dawdling or the passing accuracy, but ideally both. They stick out like a sore thumb now, but even then they weren't really problems that he had a couple of years ago.
christ
The problem Longstaff has is that you donāt notice him when heās playing well. He doesnāt have the same levels to his game that Bruno and Tonali have, heās never going to be a highlight reel player. But when heās on it he really helps hang the midfield together by being the person who does the unsexy stuff. The flip side of that is that when he has a shitter itās really obvious. Not only is he crap, but weāre usually getting battered too. Iāve no idea why a local lad who has played a pivotal role in the progress of this club over the last few years gets so much hate. But then thereās a huge amount I donāt understand about some of the entitled fuckers that āsupportā us.

STM
His biggest weakness is his mental strength, you can see it in his body language, he's got imposter syndrome. He does all the easily teachable parts of the game really well, it's the bits where you need real technical quality which lets him down. When he has a run of games, he's a much better player but I really hope he never has that run of games because the team will suffer, which is a bit of a problem for him. Provided he's 5th/6th choice, I'm ok with him being here but will he be OK with that? And if he is, isn't that the problem entirely?

Then we could keep players like Longstaff around and give them games now and then where we felt they could contribute to a result. The issue is, we don't have money to spend on players who will improve us. If you got Ā£15m for Longstaff you could spend that on a young player with a much higher ceiling, whose value would appreciate. That is where you have to weigh up the pros and cons of giving out new contracts to players whose value decreases every year.

KaKa
He's nowhere near as bad as he has played the last two games against pretty limited opposition. And that's what makes the whole thing so frustrating. He gets too down on himself and plays with fear. This leads to him dwelling on the ball because he's indecisive and second guessing himself, or he just starts playing it very safe every time, which invites pressure when we're trying to advance the ball. He also then stats mis-controlling the ball, scuffing shots and going to ground looking for free kicks under minimal pressure. It's so painful to watch man. Like someone already mentioned, his body language just looks so bad. He needs a serious shift in his mindset/mentality, to overcome these things for himself. ponsaelius
I like Longstaff and have defended him on here previously because I think he has generally contributed a lot for us under Eddie. I also think he's clearly a very nice and humble guy. I'd have been happy for him to stay and be 5th/6th choice midfielder, particularly given how short we are on club grown players for Europe. However I think I've realised that he's actually not a very suitable squad player. He has generally done best for us when he's getting lots of gametime in a position where he knows his role and can build up confidence and momentum. When he's dropped into random games now and again in slightly different roles, particularly in scratch sides, I think it really shines a light on his weaknesses technically on the ball - and that is then exacerbated further by his self confidence issues. This makes him probably a pretty bad squad player, unfortunately for him and for us. I think I've become more frustrated with him given we had to sacrifice another HG player for PSR instead, who I think will have a much better career and actually is a really safe pair of hands to drop into various positions when needed. This summer is the last chance you have to get a decent fee, so if it's there, definitely time to take it. Edited February 10 by ponsaelius
