It's better than the alternative. An early flag giving offside, players stopping, then VAR saying it wasnt offside.

But if he misses do they just crack on?  Doesn't make sense really.

It is absolutely not better than the alternative. The alternative is that he's given offside, no goal happens and who gives a fuck.

The alternative is that the ref flags when somebody is onside and stops the goal happening. You can't go back and fix it as the attack has been stopped, rendering VAR pointless.

I hate VAR, and would rather it be gone forever, but if you're going to have it that is the only way VAR will work for offsides.

 You know people will give a fuck. That's why we have fucking VAR. If someone is played through and is possibly going to score, if the flag is then raised and they stop, only to then have VAR say it was wrong. Theyve been denied that goal scoring opportunity. Or the player plays on, the defenders stop and raise thir hands. The players scores then the defending team kick off because they stopped because it was given offside. But then VAR over rules it.. Happened a couple of times. Both situations are awful. So is the late flag but it's a symptom of VAR.

Aye, never understand people complaining about late flags - keeping it down a few seconds to allow play to continue is preferential to the build up to goals potentially being halted by being incorrectly called offside.

So in theory they could play another few minutes then score, and pull it back to the offside?

In theory yes. But again this is the other fundamental flaw with VAR, because football is so fluid. A foul or offside or foul throw etc that happened minutes ago can ultimately lead to a goal - but they won't pull it back. So you're only intervening based on arbitrary periods of time and phases.

Why the fuck does the lino even need to exist? What is the flags purpose? If VAR is just going to check this shit, kill the lino off. He is redundant. Save on his wages and get another ivory backscratcher.

potentially I suppose aye. Suppose it depends how long the VAR check to take for how long they could theoretically play on.

Nah, linos are only told to keep them down in the build up to a potential goal. Don’t need to wait for a break in play to flag, unlike full VAR check.
