Not sure about the price, but a deal with Audi does seem to be likely. They've even tied it into a preseason friendly against Bayern Munich.

Agree for the on the pitch, Emery vs. Howe stuff.

If they start to noticeably pull ahead of us commercially though then I'd say it's the most obvious example of how PIF and the club are failing (not saying that's happening).

Everyone getting jealous of Emery in Villa for winning a trophy we not only weren’t in but we were in a more elite competition.

Won’t get any thanks showcasing Audi in Munich

A few clubs seem to have issues with sponsors recently. Chelsea and Forest I can think of. Wonder if it’s just big brands cutting spending on this kind of traditional marketing or something?

Eh? Audi and Bayern have had a partnership for more than 20 years.

Fair enough, just assumed Bavaria would be all BMW

I think that helps Bayern get big money from them. All the players get company cars, their preseason tour is sponsored by them, etc.

Imagine the uproar if Nissan decided to sponsor us....unemployment down the road would triple when they all quit

So you could say we had spent badly?

Why would you see that as spending badly? Anderson was excellent this season

Understand this was being touted at c. half the price of the existing Sela deal, on a one year interim basis, as recent as a few weeks ago. Would be a surprise at this stage if it’s anything but a backwards step commercially.

Fucking big yikes, this lot aren't remotely serious then. Time to adjust expectations to also rans.

Audi own a part of Bayern.

Silly assumption that if they had ties with anyone it would BMW but Ingolstadt is a Bavarian city as well.

They are also part owned by Adidas, and Allianz.

This is the point I make about the myth of the German 51%.
Within Bayerns 49% they have owners consisting of the worlds largest sportswear manufacturer, a division of one of the worlds largest car manufacturers, and one of the largest financial institutes in the world.

Leverkusen are part owned by Bayer, one of the largest pharmacy companies in the world, to the point that the roof of their stadium is supposed to resemble an aspirin pill.

The list goes on.

I appreciate Aston Villa have had a great season, but I think that has distracted from what was a somewhat poor set of transfers in the last 12 months.

In the summer they nabbed a couple of youngsters that haven't played much (either with Villa or on loan) and dropped good money on Evann Guessand who finished the season with Crystal Palace (they'll recoup some of that when he joins them). They then dropped close to 40m on Tammy Abraham, Alysson and Madjo. They've not been able to register Madjo so he's been sat in limbo.

They'll need to shift a few fringe lads who were on loan last year and if Morgan Rogers leaves that's a big piece to replace. For them it's less about the money and more about the ability to find talent that improves them.

This also sounds like major cope but their European leading number of goals from outside the penalty area was the difference for them. It’s impossible to accept that as sustainable.

On all fairness all I was saying was that for a team who have performed similar to us in recent years, they have apparently managed to get a decent sponsorship deal, so there must be someone out there who will be prepared to offer similar to us.

Villa’s biggest issue is that it’s a super old squad and very few of their Emery era transfers have been major successes.

7 of the 11 starters in the Europa league final were there before Emery - which is damning.  Considering Emery has had European pull and good wages for nearly all of his transfer windows.

It might also be an Emery thing too. Of the 4 Emery era signings that started the final they are aged:

29

31

29

23

It’s not an Howe situation of inheriting an old squad.  Emery has been allowed to sign older players and insists on playing them and it’s not sustainable. Emery inherited a class young spine and has just let it age. They do have younger options but he’s choosing to start a 31yo loanee CB in Lindelof over 24 yo Onana (no idea of the story there) and starts 30 something Digne over Maatsen.

Emery might leave Vila checkmated when he runs to Real if they allow it to continue.  Given their position allowing Emery to sign Abraham for £18m is insane.  They need a level headed Duran.  I can really see a checkmate situation because I’ve seen no signs of it ending.  They replaced 24 yo Guessand with 28yo Abraham.  Don’t give Elliott a chance and preferred another loanee they would never sign permanently. As it stands they only have 1 £50m+ valued player - purely down to age and not developing younger players.

Big summer for them.  They need to sign players 21-25 and play them.

We really had a great thing going with Ashworth. He only signed 1 outfield player 25 and over I believe. Maybe 2?

Emery has done a brilliant job no doubt. But Villa have invested a lot of money in his time and the squad profile is very old.

Ive been very complimentary of Villa and Emery but I have a doomsday scenario for them. They continue as they have been - signing older players, high quality loans and compete well on all fronts. But because teams like Bournemouth and Sunderland are in Europe, new manager City, Slot etc. PL doesn’t get 5th CL place. Stronger seasons from Alonso’s Chelsea, DeZerbi’s Spurs and us without Europe mean Villa do well, maybe finish 5th but don’t qualify for the CL. Emery leaves to replace Jose at Madrid - maybe the Spain NT job.   Villa are left with an old squad with no wingers, low market value so they return to midtable the next season, lose twice to newly promoted Birmingham City who miraculously qualify for Europe.

- end novel.
