Is a bit of a shame they haven’t decided to postpone the Sela display tomorrow, even a couple of weeks would mean the kittiwakes breeding season is largely over

I'm surprised there hasn't been more said about it if I'm honest. They're a red listed species.

But as with a lot of stuff like this, the general opinion will be, people couldn't give a shit. They want flashy lights.

Newcastle United are in advanced talks to secure a seven-figure training kit sponsor before the start of the season after “unprecedented” sales on the first day of their new £30m-a-year Adidas kit deal.

The start of the much-hyped agreement with the German sportswear giant is seen as a “big bang” moment for Newcastle’s plansto double commercial revenue every two years, which in turn is key to giving the club more ability to spend on players under the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).

And those ambitions mean the club want to secure both a training kit sponsor and naming rights to their Benton training basebefore the end of the year. i understands there is optimism a multi-year deal for a training kit sponsor can be secured in time for the start of the new season – and their hand will have been strengthened by what are understood to be record first day sales for the home kit launch.

Supporters queued all day outside the club’s temporary club shop to get their hands on one of the £80 shirts with one fan outside the doors at midnight, a full eight hours before it opened.

The harsh truth is that Newcastle need to find a way to monetise that excitement in the PSR era. For while the club’s commercial revenue leapt by 65 per cent to £43.9m in their latest accounts – with an expected £30m to be banked from Champions League participation in the next set – they still lag far behind rivals like Manchester United, whose £302.9m commercial revenue is the Premier League’s gold standard. Failing to qualify for European competition next season, which would have triggered bonuses in their existing sponsorship deals, was a bitter blow.

Newcastle, though, would point out that progress has been impressive given they have had to build a retail operation almost from scratch.

More than 100 staff – among them retail specialists and digital trends analysts – have been appointed to build an in-house retail operation and ecommerce platform to make the most of the Adidas launch. The club unveiled a new website last week and also announced a lucrative deal with JD Sports.

And a new club store is set to open its doors in August modelled on Borussia Dortmund’s“best-in-class” facility at the Westfalenstadion. Designers have borrowed the “walk through” experience customers get in Germany and insiders believe the volume and quality of stock should reflect the investment.

The days of fans outside the UK not even being able to buy a Newcastle shirt – a regular complaint on overseas tours – should at least be over and that will aid the club as they look to bolster their global brand, one of the reasons behind a controversial post-season tour of Australiathat was criticised by everyone from environmental campaigners to club legend Alan Shearer.

Adidas hailed an “immensely positive” first day of their partnership with Newcastle.

“Having Newcastle as part of the Adidas stable is an exciting move for the brand, reaffirming our commitment to partnering with clubs that have a rich history and a passionate fanbase,” Adidas vice president Chris Walsh told i.

“This partnership not only rekindles a cherished relationship but also places Newcastle alongside other elite football clubs globally.”

Adidas spent thousands on guerilla marketing and a slick black and white launch video voiced by Shearer and there will be other fan initiatives to mark the launch of second and third kits later in the summer.

“There are exciting plans in the works to engage the fanbase and celebrate the partnership,” Walsh said.

“These initiatives will aim to bring fans and players closer together, enhancing the overall experience and building anticipation for the upcoming season.”

Undoubtedly there are nostalgic reasons fuelling supporter’s enthusiasm for Adidas’ return – they were kit suppliers when Newcastle battled with Manchester United for the Premier League title in the mid-nineties.

The second kit is understood to play up to those retro vibes while the third strip has a green and white colourway that would appear to be a nod to Newcastle’s Saudi Arabia ownership while also referencing a change strip from 2003/4.

There are other benefits to Newcastle of partnering with Adidas. The club will hold a training camp – with a possible warm-up match – at the firm’s £850m performance centre in Herzogenaurach in Germany next month before a longer tour of Japan in August.

One of the reasons for picking Japan? It is primarily an Adidas market.

I wonder if this is a hint that they’re planning on staying at Benton HQ long term?

Wouldn’t the sponsorship just move with the ground. Maybe they’re just following their road map as they are growing/expanding everything in all departments. Some task. Either way exciting times and money in the bank too.

Fuck if I know. Too much positivity out of the club over the last 48 hours so I’m just brining myself down a peg

Probably, since they have just doubled the size (or more) of the place by buying the vacated land next door.

Newcastle United set for training ground expansion after next-door neighbours move out

The Northumberland FA's exit will see United expand their facilities

Whitley Park has been the home of the Northumberland FA since 2003 with Newcastle renting the pitch to allow their Under-21 side to play at the 1,000 capacity ground. The building has dressing rooms, offices and function rooms which have been used for NFA meetings over the years and could be put to good use by the Magpies.

Chronicle Live understands that Newcastle will expand their operation across to Whitley Park from Benton with a media hub set to be unveiled in the building. At present Press conferences take place in the main facility in a multi-purpose room but next season this is set to change.

The Northumberland FA will soon move on from Whitley Park, and Newcastle could move some staff across to the building next door .

Be interesting to see if they can build a “state of the art” facility there or if they’re walking back one of their first big claims
