TheBrownBottle Posted Monday at 21:02 Share Posted Monday at 21:02 Not the end of the world, we’ll hire someone in, all will be well. He does seem to have been a decent scout, so he should be wished well and onwards and upwards.
80 Posted Monday at 21:53 Share Posted Monday at 21:53 Doesn't sound like good news insofar as our transfer record seems to have gotten weaker the further away from the centre of action Nickson has seemed to be. Hopefully this is just what's become an inevitable end to the chapter and a new more positive one will be starting with Wilson tuning things up. If you believe Luke Edwards, the last deal Nickson was central to was Botman, so this might not be true.

Even if that was the case, what I said would still stand, really. We very gradually lost momentum after that explosive first two windows where our £s to performance ratio was ridiculous - and a lot of our rosier more recent targets first came onto our radar as much cheaper, younger prospects when he was apparently at his most influential e.g. Pedro and Ekitike. It sounded like Nickson was sniffing around the chance to succeed Ashworth back in early 24, but the club went in a different direction and he's seemingly been pretty peripheral since - and apparently not just because Paul Mitchell was a dick. Viana Posted Tuesday at 01:19 Share Posted Tuesday at 01:19 I'm going to be honest, I feel like some people have concluded the club is a mess and are now scouring the floor for evidence to support that belief. Steve Nickson by all accounts is a very good talentspotter. He orchestrated a number of key deals for the club during the first phase of the takeover. It's also being reported that he has an offer to be DOF at West Ham. If that's true, it's not a huge surprise he wants to leave for a job with more responsibility and influence. It's pointless unpicking the situation here and why he was not trusted to be our DOF. I'd simply thank him for his great work and wish him luck. toontownman Posted Tuesday at 03:30 Share Posted Tuesday at 03:30 Shame to see him go. Change is inevitable though, especially with new people running things that likely want their people in. Felt shit when Carr left but we survived and moved on. Not the end of the world imo.

captainhaircut Posted Tuesday at 08:04 Share Posted Tuesday at 08:04 Doesn’t the fact that we never made him Director of Football despite being in a mess there twice tells us that they never really rated Nickson? Given Wilson is heading it up and we are building out a big scouting network, I don’t think losing Nickson is a big deal. He’s taking a promotion elsewhere that we don’t think he’s worth with us. It’s much easier to improve a relegation/championship squad into a top 7-10 squad if you spend the money that we did early on. To improve drastically on the eye and in the league to become regular 1-6 team much harder, especially when PSR kicks in and bites hard as the players you aim for are also chased more competitively by the already 1-6 teams. No ones fault we didn’t have a Pedro + Ekitike forward line last season. Just the realities. No point looking too deeply into it.

Not at all mate, but this ex-mental health nurse doesn’t need you to complete a PDQ-4 to diagnose you. My Mrs has never felt the need to ask for Angela, but I’m pretty sure you’ve been layed out on your arse for being a mouthy prick on multiple occasions. No ones fault we didn’t have a Pedro + Ekitike forward line last season. Just the realities. No point looking too deeply into it. Sure it's easy to improve a bad squad, but if you just look qualitatively at the signings, the prices paid and the impact still being felt by the club to this day both on and off the pitch, the signings have got weaker and weaker across time. The trend has been from bargain legends (Burn, Bruno, Trippier (yes I'm aware Howe gets main credit for him)), to solid but market priced (Barnes, Livramento, Tonali) to tripe (Wissa, Elanga). And Nickson seems to have gone from front and centre to committee member to no mark across that same period. I haven't got any special knowledge about what actually happened, it could just be correlation rather than causation, but it's interesting. Agreed it's not especially blameworthy that we didn't have Pedro and Ekitike last season, I think you've misunderstood my point there. Can't help Ekitike being a div back in 22, and even people who blame Amanda Staveley for our PSR situation usually reveal their preferences by being pleased we dumped Pedro for Isak. As I say, I'm not really losing too much sleep over him going - if there has been damage, it's already been done. Wilson seems to have made a good start this summer so hopefully we've got a great new model on the way.
LFEE Posted Tuesday at 13:34 Share Posted Tuesday at 13:34 Yes but if we’d bought Tonali, Barnes and Tino first they’d be cheaper and would’ve of made a bigger difference to what you think they have. Vice versa then Bruno etc all become more expensive when we buy them and make less of a difference. Not sure you are grasping how the transfer market works in reality. There’s no defined metric to a player price.
