Chelsea away aside, we've been much more like ourselves overall than the first few games and today was a culmination of the increasing competition as the squad's sharpness levels out imo. General application has largely been good, just certain combinations and/or sharpness haven't quite been there. We should've smashed Brighton, for example - that one still stings. It feels like we have some better momentum now and more clarity about what we need to be for the foreseeable, even if there are a few selection headaches for Forest. Yeah Hall was basically saying this in his match interview. Had been playing better but not seeing results.

But some of our results and performances don’t look quite so bad in hindsight. Bournemouth are looking like a bit of a monster at home. Outplayed us for the most part, beat Arsenal, battered Chelsea and somehow lost, easy win against Southampton. 2-0 against City with 20 to go. Brighton still winning at Anfield and should have been 2-3 up at half time. That first 35-40 was dominant against them and we still had chances we should have buried second half. Everton we know we should have won. Chelsea wasn’t great, but again, a close game. Hopefully we are finding our groove and can start replicating the home performances away. Or at least improving them, as we have not been good enough on the road for a long while. EDIT: The Brighton score went well but my point still stands. Aye. Brighton, Bournemouth and forest all looking good this season. It's a tough league

JEToon
I had expected us to look high energy this season, to have a bit more yards and legs than other top teams in the league given we don’t have Europe. A bit like a Rodgers lite version of the Liverpool side who made a big title push, when yes, they had a really World Class player in Suarez but also ran the arse off leggy looking sides, we haven’t looked that a lot to me and that’s disappointed me, I haven’t enjoyed a lot of our start to the season. The energy hasn’t looked swung in our favour as much as I’d hoped. We have looked a lot more high energy this week, we’ve altered bits, rotated well, game managed well and looked to have lot more purpose, that’s great, so much credit to Eddie. A few more fit is helping, the ability to alter and change game to game, inject the right pace, legs, ball winners, ball players will be big for us, Eddie nailed the relevant selection for each game this week. r0cafella
Good result proper chuffed for Eddie he needed the players to react and that's exactly what he's got. We do usually seem up for it against so called big teams at home though so we have to find ways of channeling that against smaller sides and especially away from home. Also very pleased to see him using the squad and particularly pleased for Long staff who had a good game.

I'll be more convinced we've turned the corner this season if we can put in good performances and pick up positive results over the next three matches. It's no good putting on a colossal showing like today if we get rolled over at Forest and Palace. This result needs to kick start our season. As others have said, I think with Willock in the team we're a totally different proposition. What you're saying is of course valid, but this revival looks different because we're doing things we haven't done in 12 months or more. I think we've got much more scope for putting teams to the sword now. Fantastic today. Couldn't pick a MOTM, most of the team was eligible.
Thumbheed
Win, lose or draw, I think it's completely fair to say he's turned St James into a stadium that travelling sides dread. That to me is hallmark of an excellent side, which he deserves an unwavering amount of respect (and patience) for, all things considered. The hallmarks of a great side are what we do away, which I firmly believe he'll crack. I don't think people have quite appreciated the dearth of technical qualities between our squad and the squads or the great sides in the world. Tactics, coaching and motivation can only go so far. Ultimately, absolute execution of the these things and the postivie results they garner are defined by how good a player actually is with the ball at his feet. We still have a very long way to go and are already comfortably sticking it to some of the best sides in the world.

AyeDubbleYoo
It’s so hard to keep up with whether we should be ecstatic or raging. Let’s hope the decision makers aren’t as bipolar as we are.
Smal
Not sure what we did specifically but we kept them out of the problem area between defence and midfield. Havertz barely involved in the game and they really lacked an Odegaard too I think.

For me the last couple of games we've had both and that makes me feel happy. Prior to that we were getting either one or the other, and sometimes neither. From what I saw over the last few days we have the parts to build an effective side, we just have to put them together in the right order.

Smal
I think being a football fan is really an emotional thing and that it's normal for people to be very up and down about it. I wish people would be more understanding of that when considering people's reactions really. Being bipolar about it is an inherent part of being a fan. Today I'm really hopeful about our chances. Last week I was utterly abject about them. Edited November 3, 2024 by Smal

So I guess we’ll have to differ on it.

Yeah, for the first time in a long time we've a) performed well b) got the results, and c) achieved them in replicable ways, rather than 30 yard shots, unforced mistakes or throwing the kitchen sink. Definitely. While throwing the kitchen sink can be exciting, it doesn't inspire confidence when you get left open on the counter. I've seen this change in the last two games, the gap between midfield and defence seems to have closed in a healthy way. I don't mind conceding a bit of possession as long as we are using the ball well when we have it. We looked compact on Wednesday and yesterday, and using different defenders and midfielders without affecting that solidity bodes well for the rest of the season. PopeandGlory
Got it ticking again yesterday. The last 2 have been almost like watching us 2022/23. Pressing, go a goal or two up and then see out the game with a solid defensive performance and shithousery. Other than Liverpool we’ve got a reasonably favourable set of fixtures coming up until Boxing Day. Lets hope this continues.
soyt
It is funny how every time you seem to start having a bit of a doubt about Eddie, he comes up with the answers. I was too really unsure about Burn and Longstaff starting, but all the managers decisions were spot on and fully vindicated. It is simply a treat to beat Arsenal. What we need now is to keep this up more consistently and then get some solid reinforcements in January. Edited November 3, 2024 by soyt
