It will be all about working with what we've got and taking it one game at a time, out of situations like this you can still find some positives such as Miley who would've never got this sort of chance with a full squad, hopefully some others can rise to the occasion until we get some of our senior players back.

There are no obvious options, it's all tradeoffs. So we need to be very tolerant of whatever happens, basically, whether that's playing tired players who consequently get injured, or putting out lacklustre lineups in competitions we'd normally want to take seriously.

thing is, the issue isn’t that we don’t have numbers. The squad is full… it’s just half of them are injured . We can de-register Tonali to free up a space and that’s about it. We can sign under 21s who don’t need to be registered for the PL too I guess.

Don’t think he’s a mercenary by any stretch. By all accounts, he’s worked extremely hard at Man City and has wanted to play more, he’s not caused any rifts or issues. My issue is whether he has the drive to be the best. The limited game time over the last few years suggests he maybe doesn’t have the will to become the best he can be. However, who knows, it’s not like any of us know what’s going on there for sure

There was a great article on the Athletic last week about our set pieces, about the variations, choreographed blocking, misdirections, etc. we do.

 

Following on from it, yesterday we manufactured a free header for Joelinton that he should have scored and a free header for Lacelles that hit the back of the net. It was three or four passes after the free kick, so maybe won't count in the stats as a set piece, but was clearly us working the ball so it could be delivered from an unexpected angle to an unexpected target. That would be a set piece goal in my book.

People sure are making a lot of the 3 keepers thing. 

 

We only get 5 subs that we can make per game, he's included 6 outfield players that he trusts (to differing degrees) to introduce into the pitch - given all 6 got on bar Parkinson, who had 25 mins at Bournemouth. He may well only trust the academy lads for short cameos or giving the senior lads a breather late on but he's clearly selected lads he can trust to do that rather than just populate the bench with lads who aren't ready and he won't ever use.

 

Granted there's like an absolute fractionally miniscule chance that we manage to go through Pope, Dubravka, Karius and Gillespie in one match due to injury or red cards but better to have them all sat there than empty seats. Imagine if our injury/suspension crisis suddenly extended to the goalkeeping department and we had an empty seat instead of a registered keeper we needed to use? There'd be hell on if we suddenly had to hoy an outfielder in net.

 

I understand there's a point to then be made about the depth/quality of our U23/academy if we can't scrape together another couple of lads who he can trust, but it's a long process to sort out the shambolic shell it was when we were bought 2 years ago and a lot of the promising ones are out on loan anyway.

It may just be that you get a bonus payment if you’re on the bench and Eddie didn’t want to give it to young lads who were nowhere near the first team squad.

 

Also six academy lads might have diluted the honour given to the three that made it.
