Which isn’t helping as we’re dropping deeper as a result. I’m really surprised that Howe hasn’t tried Ramsdale yet, but I’ll happily say he knows far better than I do. Has he? Seen him do it a good few times already. Usually followed by his trademark hoof. He was nearly on the halfway line against Liverpool in the first half did it against Arsenal a couple of times and all when needed. EDIT - I know Kaiz loses his mind if anyone mentions Fbref. But if you go on there and compare to other seasons. His average defensive actions are basically the same as his best season for us and higher than other seasons. I think it was 18.4 yards this seasons v 18.2. More defensive actions outside the penalty area, too. Albeit a much smaller sample size this season, of course! Erikse
Hope that we can at some point bring back the type of football we played about 2 years ago, when we beat Sheffield Utd 8-0, PSG 4-1, and Palace 4-0 in just 1 month. We played some amazing football in that run. Heck, even in the 22/23 season we won several games by a large margin. Trippier just needs to find the fountain of youth, and then we are all set. With Wolt, you've signed an excellent player who has the qualities of a 10 rather than a 9. I don’t think that is correct. We wanted Ekitike, when it was evident to the club but not yet the public that Isak really wanted to leave. He would have been the ‘replacement’. We would have still pursued others for the Wilson replacement, I’m including Wissa on that list.

I think if we got Etitike early on in the window, our 2nd signing would’ve been so much more different to what we’ve ended with. Like we wouldn’t have been pushed into signing Wissa for £50m. We will never know of course, but Woltemade and Wissa combo would’ve been something that was never ever considered until late August so that’s months of planning based on April onwards scrapped and something new required as the season is underway. Uphill task which we need to hope clicks soon, and potentially shifts the future direction. As what was planned team wise moving forward may now be completely different with Woltemade here. Suggests he's not too confident in our forwards at the moment, and tbh, looking at their output it's not hard to see why. They aren't exactly creating a bucketload of chances. Lotus
It's the lack of desire to see the midfield play football that's confusing me a bit. I understand JL has his limitations but the other 2 could surely make up for them. We have 2 out of 3 of some of the best ball players in the Prem in Bruno & Tonali. Excellent 1st touch great technique, vision, quick thinkers.....
nufc4eva
I think at times we need more patience about us, play it about, recycle the ball more and try to work openings. We rush it, lose it and then defend a lot.

Not great at keeping possession but they create and can score. I think Wissa suits the old style a lot. The squad is weirdly designed. Our CBs are great on the ball. But a CM and wingers aren’t. So we are setup for defenders to setup attackers to run into space or for the transition with a high press. Eddie would’ve seen how Barca controlled injury time against us and said ‘we do not do that’. It’s proper Atleti ball.

Aye also don’t try to play through a high press. Whoever’s on the ball will play it into the channels or for the striker to win. It’s a team built for the transition except for who looks like our best attacker.

What I meant was that Wolt's acquisition might not have been the prospect Howe was really looking for (Ekitike sure was)... let's be clear, Wolt isn't a second choice (in terms of value) but at that point in the transfer market it was an obligatory choice. Similar thing happened to us (or even worse): we searched for a striker all summer, and then (when time ran out) we bought Nkunku ... who wasn't what we needed. The front 3 of Gordon/Walt/Elanga also are very good at retaining the ball. Admittedly Gordon has had some brain farts recently but in general good. I wonder if it's because of the amount of work we put in off the ball, not sure. This is why I enjoyed the Bradford game so much, just not sure if we have the ability to execute a passing style like that against better sides. Certainly we would need to consider taking Murphy and Pope out and possibly Gordon if he can't find his best form.

A lot of it is down to the style of play of Howe/Nuno. Interestingly, Longstaff said at Leeds they do a lot more training in possession/with the ball and that was a change for him.
