May I ask you to explain to me, if I’m “on something”, in plain English, why Howe is prevented from adapting his tactics to suit our personnel during this ‘transitional period’?

I'm asking if you are on something, because you decided to straw man my argument when I didn't say anything of the sort. It's bad faith arguing, man.

I think he has tried to adapt without totally changing the overall system. Against PSV is an example of subtle changes to Joelinton's position for instance. It's been mixed. We've still gotten better results than the beginning of the season though, but it hasn't been a success either.

Should he try Wissa and Woltemade more? Probably. It looked shit once, but that isn't much of a data point.

Tough fixtures coming up, our players dropping like flies also. Call me cynical but somehow I don't think we'll make Europe this season.

Good thing we have a massive European game to look forward to!

I’m struggling to see what transition we’re trying to make. We just plough on with the same shit every game. It’s almost like pretending we still have Isak when we don’t. The subs are like for like and the only time they work is when giving us more energy, not because we’ve changed the way we’re playing. We have more quality that most teams, especially on the bench, which is why we can still win games. I see no sign of any transitioning period.

Whether he's trying to transition to something else or not, we are stuck in a disruptive period because of the summer, which has put us in a transitional mode becasue we lost our focal point up front and the replacements haven't been up to the task yet. I think he is trying to get us to play more possession football, but we are much more toothless than we've ever been. So far it's 4-3-3 in our last 10. Not great at all, but not exactly an unmitigated disaster either.

If we purchased Elanga to play with a striker who told us months before he wanted to leave, then you’re giving Howe an even smaller defence than you think you are.

Why would Howe know any of that.. he wouldn't play Isak if had an idea he wanted out.

Isak wasn't for sale until he went on strike.  You're reaching here.

It was a tough position to be in, but he's responsible for the profile of player coming through the door. He spent a lot of money on Jacob Ramsey. I'd love to ask him why he signed him.

Because we haven't seen his Villa form from a couple of seasons ago yet, or because you look at that and still don't see why?

I know Eddie's glass is always "half full" but I've not enjoyed this season. Too many poor results and inconsistent performances. Losing to the mackems was obviously the worst of the worst but we've struggled in most games. Even that Leeds game was life and death although 10/10 for entertainment. Think we look a mid-table side which is where we'll probably finish.

Actually a bit shocked at the volume of fans on X (I know) that actively want him out. The shortest of short memories.

Remember, we do have a large section of fucking morons that follow us.

Never underestimate how many complete knackers we have who follow us. Most of them from the comfort of their online presence.

I still don't see why. To me he is the same profile of player as Willock. He's a slight upgrade and has similar injury problems.

Hope he’s eyeing three at the back now Burn is fit again and we’re potentially without Bruno and Joe. Get Big Dan back in and shithouse our way to some surprise results. Even having Osula back could open the way to playing two up top.

What do you want people to say on this thread after a run of the mill home win against Palace, for example? “Well done Eddie, the 433 (really 451) slow build up play worked this week against a team with lesser resources than us”

People are always going to have more to say when it’s bad, or exceptionally good.

I expect the man that has achieved what he has for us to get a lot more respect than the hysterical tarts give him on here after a few bad results

Probably do nothing, its what they excel in.

Like Eddie's subs and tactical flexibility. React calmly and painfully slowly, often too late to do anything meaningful.

I think they are just hell bent on doing it organically and not looking like they bought the league (even though we can't anymore with PSR and big 6 tantrums). Even with the the huge chance at promotion for the women, it seems like they are happy to play the longer term waiting game for consistency.

It is to a point, refreshing in a world of quick fix, impatient decisions and manager merry go rounds. Incredibly frustrating though at times when be more proactive makes all the difference come season end.

Howe thought we were better second half than first half, not sure where he's got that from tbh.

Well we dominated possession. Other than the great start, we were under the cost a bit for much of the first half and bullied in midfield.

The fact Villa sat back and let us have the ball is maybe a little lost. We were better getting possession but equally poor creating opportunities. So a net win.

Here's our big problem, Howe is the type of manager who values systems over individual input (he's a Pep lite) and therefore signs players who are system players.

A DoF will want to implement a general ethos of playing that allows a manger to be plug and play.

This may (probably will) clash with Howe's systemic approach if he can't control who comes in.

A good number of managers are going to have to get used to being part of a team managing players, systems and tactics. I can see the Chelsea model being the one followed by most of the PL in 3 years time.

Agreed. I’m a big fan of the manager being the plug and play element rather than the entire club being built around one coach. That’s how you create a long-term identity and continuity.

Building everything around a manager who might only stay a few years feels like a structural risk, especially if recruitment is heavily system-specific. That’s where Howe’s approach could clash with a DoF-led model (and he clashed with Paul Mitchell).

Modern football is increasingly data-driven and specialised, and those processes should live at club level, not with a single manager. The exceptions (Pep, Klopp etc.) are just that – exceptions. For most clubs, a coherent club philosophy with adaptable managers makes far more sense long-term. Not least for a PSR rocked club like Newcastle.

Get Geordie Boy Carrick in to replace this chancer 😉

Joke aside loved the fact he went attacking after Dorgu went off. Very refreshing to see in the modern game.

Aye they've been excellent to watch these last 2 games I've got to grudgingly admit. Would have been easy to shut up shop at 2-2 but he was having none of it. Fair play.

We must be very easy to set up a game-plan against.

Well that was the 8th time we've failed to score this season, a figure I expect to rise quite a bit in the coming weeks, which suggests you're right.

With the speed PIF do things, they’ve probably already decided to sack Howe. It’ll take them 3 months to announce it and another 6 months to get a replacement.

It's all brutally predictable now. Sad to see.
