When talking about progress this season, it's interesting the cup runs are never spoken about.

 After 14 years of us throwing cup ties so we could concentrate on existing in the PL, good to see good cup progress is completely taken for granted already. Another rod Howe has made for his own back.

Don't think any of those would take the job.  Or Maresca or Jogi Low.

Southgate, Iraola or Pochettino might.

After that you're looking at the likes of Thomas Frank, Marco Silva, the bloke from Sunderland -- that sort of level. Or try to tempt Mourinho back for (another) last hurrah.

There's not one of them that I'd bet on to do a better job than Eddie.  Sacking him would be absolutely nuts.

You wouldn’t sack him for any of those managers I agree. But plenty on here still stuck in the Ashley era and underestimating pull of NUFC, owners and the Premier League.

What? The Keegan who was at the mighty Southampton and knew he was no longer going to be in the England set-up?

Aye, that's him.

We must remember what kind of club NUFC was at that time. KK dropped a Division to join us.

Southampton were a much better club than us at the time.

Largely agree. Iraola would be the only one of the realistic contenders who'd interest me.

Alonso might, last I heard he’s out of work.  It’s not like we haven’t persuaded a manager whose last managerial job was Real Madrid to join before.

I wouldn’t hire Alonso over Howe, though.

Ex Real Manager you say, Ancelotti it is.

I reckon he's one of the managers likely to leave international management after the world cup and he'd definitely be interested in the job.

Would help to keep Bruno as well

He’s got 10x the net spend of Emery.  He’s been backed pretty handsomely.  Needs to get a tune out of what he’s assembled.

I am talking about Jan - zero spend

Let's say he did come to Newcastle. It is very likely it wouldn't go well.

He would be linked to every top job throughout his time here, that's what happened at Everton and it was unsettling for the team. He was much bigger than that Everton job and he knew it and inevitably he left for Madrid.

Would be the same with us.

Conte at Spurs was the same, when managers are bigger than the job there is nothing to motivate them.

He's 66 now and has done every big club going. That risk is much lower now.

He's also a winner pretty much everywhere he has been and would help evolve the style of play if that's a direction the club wants to take.

Even in his time at Everton he finished 10th with 2 quarter finals, not bad for where Everton have been before and after his time there.

He would be the best realistic target if a change is made.

The 2 Germans facing off at the world cup would be next in the hierarchy bit Tuchel is likely to be a bit sparky for PIF and Nagglesman is a bit of a wild card and more likely to attract the media noise on potential job hopping.

Then it's someone like Jose (it's written in the stars that he wins the league with us 🤣) or younger manager with something to prove but a lot of risk

‘Being backed by the board’ in today’s modern game is putting together a transfer committee that gets him the best players. That gets Mo Salah over the managers preference Julian Brandt.

I have my doubts that the board were the ones headhunting Andy Howe to run the transfer committee

Nowt to spend in Jan if you spunk a quarter of a billion in the summer

Not what kieran maguire said - reckoned we'd head room to have spent £100 mil this Jan / £100 mil in the Summer

Gonna have to agree to disagree.

Just would think any top club without a manager would inevitably be linked to a big name like Ancelotti.  Which would have the potential to really unsettle us, just like it did for Everton.

He left there in a hurry when Madrid called.

Quote

Kieran Maguire on how much Newcastle could spend in January:

"They are in a really strong position. They made a huge profit on Isak, they have got the benefit of Champions League money. Newcastle could drop £200m across this window and the next window and still be well within the limits.

"Even if they sign a defender for £30m-£40m in January, they would only have six months of amortisation to throw into the equation. So a £40m defender on a five-year contract for six months only works out at a £4m cost, plus his wages, but they have got nothing to worry about."

"They get €2m just for one victory in the Champions League so they are in Position A when it comes to recruiting."

Thank you.  I cannot believe for one second that Eddie wouldn't have wanted another defender in.

Isn’t going t their job or someone else they hire job to pic the transfer committee? How many top clubs does the manager choose the transfer committee?I don’t even Pep has that power

The new SCR rules come in this summer; 85% squad cost to turnover with a 30% allowance over this figure.  If we finish lower midtable and miss out on Europe we’ll take a real knock to our income levels - and get hit with a second whammy, as our SCR will be reduced to 70% (with the usual 30% overrun).  The higher 85% limit is only for clubs which qualify for Europe. Going over the second threshold will be a sporting sanction - more than likely points deductions.

Without European qualification, we’d have a tough time of spending without selling.  You’d hope the club would be across this; even if Maguire isn’t.

edit: the ‘three season rolling’ thing doesn’t apply from next season due to the changes, so I’ve no idea why Maguire thinks the Isak sale and CL money means we can spend in the summer.

Being Liverpool and the way things have been going, I fully expected conceding 3-4 goals. It doesn’t matter how shit their form is or how well we are, it’s always like that. Feels like a curse. So I wasn’t devastated by the result.

i was more bothered by the post match conference and how broken eddie seemed. Genuinely a twinge of worry about the bloke. I think in any other job, his employer needs to say, look take a week off, tindall and the others are well paid and capable of holding the fort. Come back in a week, mentally rested, stronger and ready to get back at it.

But that won’t happen as it’s football and Eddie would just say no even if it was offered.

Don’t know, really, first time I’ve seen Eddie that down. Not nice to see.

Agreed, it shows that the club isn’t being run properly.  I also don’t think Pep would appoint his nephew.
