Wonder if we could have changed it up a bit. Stay in the game 1st half, maybe go in a goal down at HT then come out 2nd half and press. Not sure how feasible that would have been but once the 4th hit the net tonight we were cooked. We were great 1st half but paid a huge price for it (accepting the absolute shocking goals we gave away).

But then sitting off them and letting them get up a head of steam would/could have been even worse.

It is also hard to legislate for some of the criminal defending, the slips, the set pieces. Chuck in the fact they also carved us open with some great play, as you’d expect and also that their finishing was ruthless for the most part. It was like a perfect storm.

We needed to take our chances and make the most of our decent openings. I think we had say 4-5 in the first? Whilst riding our luck, defending a lot better than we did and hoping they missed loads of sitters.

They didn’t create loads more in the first hour or so. But they ended up 5-2 up. The Yamal one was the only real howler from them.

Think the end of this season has to be with a view to building for next season.

Keep Ramsdale in goal. I don't think he's any better than Pope but while he's in goal, you can at least aim to play out from GK, with view to the new GK just slotting in, the team being used to playing that way...just obviously much better.

Tino & Botman in for Trippier & Burn. Again with a view to next season.

Not for me. I'd rather have someone in goal who can save a shot even if it means we have to launch it forward from the back.

Ramsdale for me is "outfield player in nets", he's just not a goalkeeper.

Tino Botman and Hall. I'm really not sure about Thiaw. Obviously hope he proves me wrong.

That’s not Pope either. Has to be the first signing bringing a competent keeper in.

I worry about him at every set piece and his control of the box is woeful. But even as one of Pope’s biggest (and remaining) fans on here. I think you roll with Ramsdale until the end of the season.

Neither are good enough moving forward. For varying reasons.

The thought of playing either Pope or Ramsdale the rest of this season is unedifying in itself without having the prospect of it next at the same time.

I think it is really important that we now go qualify for the Conference league to break the cycle of being in and out of Europe.

Howe needs to adapt to the European schedule so being in Europe against some lesser teams might help us find a rhythm again.

I get that and we could have gone in 3/ 4 behind, I do however think we could have tried a bit of containment first half and we’d have still been able to hit them on the counter, their back line would have been even higher.

It was a great watch for the neutral in the first half, we paid a huge price second half. I can’t recall such a drop off in performance. The man for man system was exposed and we didn’t have any legs left. Absolutely agree that you can’t legislate for the poor goals we gave away.

Results have been no better or worse with either in. May as well play the one who makes you play better which will help more going into next season.

I do think that fatigue isn’t as pronounced if we go in at 2-2. Mentally it must be so draining to get back into it twice. To only concede shit, needless goals and be back to square one.

I felt like we were going to try and soak up some pressure for a good 20 minutes or more at the start of the second half. Then the fact we were 3-2 down, they really went for the jugular knowing another goal probably kills the game.

It felt like fine margins for the first 135-140 minutes of the tie. Then that what? 20 minute spell absolutely killed us and ended the contest.

Brutal at this level!

Europa League, Europa Conference. I'll take European football in any form it comes.

European football is class for fans.

It's a chance to win a trophy.

It helps our coefficient.

It exposes Eddie and the squad to the two games per week format with more opportunity to utilise the squad.

Don't really see much downside to any of it.

Watch us go one one of his winning runs between now and the end of the season, a good summer transfer window and we take our next step as a club with super Eddie in charge next season.

same as ever with newcastle. ever since i started watching them.

its always about looking to attack and score.

sometimes we need to just consolidate and take the sting out of the opposition. we did t a bit under Rafa but a lot of fans hated it.

but we'll never change.

what a great fucking club.

The fixtures lend themselves to a good run in the league. If we get 7th, furthest we’ve been in the champions league and semi final of league cup, that will be a good return given what happened with Isak and the relentlessness again of the cup draws we’ve had.

I imagine that there will be a big uptick in form since now we only have to worry about weekly games until the end of the season.  More time on the training pitch.

Europa League should be 7th which has to be the aim. Conference League in 8th is the least we should expect now tbh with one game a week and favourable fixtures. No excuses now.

Had the perfect combination in Eddie's first full season.

Look at the gulf in money and class man, we went toe to toe with them for 3 halves of football, took them to the wire and finished dead on our feet. It wasn't a fair or fitting end to a tie we were in for 135 minutes of football, they did us proud for as long as they could, we left it all out there.

I just hope there's enough left in the tank for Sunday and we don't let that second half capitulation ruin what has been a good and confident run for us.

thats my hope, as long as we have enough players fit in important positions.

Take Sunday, no Tonali or Bruno in the middle is going to be painful as hell I suspect!
