Dokko
I do wonder if he's actually decided to step down and why the season is derailed. Ever since he comments about not being here for the stadium I've wondered if he's ran out of steam or has something else he wants to do. Players pick up on that. Imagine Liverpool or Arsenal fans going on like some of the gimps in our fanbase after losing to Everton or Spurs . It just wouldn't happen . We can never be a serious club with the hysterics of the last week or so just because we lost to Sunderland . They absolutely 100% would.

Based on very little, I've wondered how much he has left in the tank since he was hospitalised last year. That sort of thing can knock fuck out of you. Due to the mess we found ourselves in during the summer, it's not like he had a lot of rest either.

Always be a legend here (like at Bournemouth) but there's a shelf life before they become the villain, especially in football..
Doctor Zaius
It's not just losing to Sunderland though is it? I'm sure you'd see way more reasoned takes if we were 5th/6th and lost bottled both derbies. We've been poor all season. Sunderland was just another spineless defeat in a season full of them really.

We need things calmed down not ramped up, the end of the season was already going to be a shit storm with all the player speculation and now we will have this as well. Plus disrespectful and risking losing a great manager. Ultimate own goal. Nonsense. The pressure should be on and it’s the managers job to thrive under it. It comes with the job. Yorkie
21 minutes ago, Dokko said: I get that, see my reply above. It's moments in time. That aside. The season as a whole has been shite, and he has as the manager to accept it, thats the role he gets paid for. That's fine, we can debate endlessly the reasons behind the season's outcomes, how shit they are, and Howe's role in that. But Hopkinson opted to put primacy on the Sunderland game in response to the question about Howe's future. My thoughts on him doing that is: hopefully it's an indication that his comments aren't to be taken too seriously; A, because no serious CEO would apply such weight to any one result, and B, because he's read the room and feels the need to be cautious on the topic of the manager. My hope (which others on the other side of the fence will disagree with) is that he's said to Howe privately: "Look, we know it's not been a great season, but you're still our guy; thing is, I need to do some media bits this week and don't want to piss the fans off; just don't read too much into what gets published, areet?" ... Rather than the face value reality, which would be the incredibly reckless decision to publicly pile a shit-ton of weight on the manager, who has been absolutely central to your soaring revenues. HaydnNUFC
Not a fan of Hopkinson so far. Already out of touch with fans with a ticket price hike despite celebrating 'record profits yeehaw'. The competing for top honours by 2030 quote is also seemingly another gaffe. Don't think the sentiments of what he's said regarding Howe are incorrect given the shitshow of a league season but it isn't exactly wise to put it out in public. Fuck CEOs basically. Can't remember the last one we had as a football club that wasn't a grade A rectangle or ming. Edited March 31 by HaydnNUFC

I agree with The Prophet that he's had no real break and had to carry the club on his own with no execs. An "I've taken the club as far as I can" is the last thing I want to hear. I think it's unlikely, or I hope it is. It might explain the equivocation from Hopkinson, though, if they'd agreed to sit down and talk at the end of the season. That's probably two plus two equals twelve, but I've also worried about burnout in the past given how much he puts into everything.

As wild conspiracy theories go, that's a good one. We shouldn't be theorising bollocks like this and all we should be doing is channelling as much support as possible for him and the players between now and the end of the season. Too many fans are using too much energy hating the guy who we owe so much to.

It’s not mass hysteria, and it’s not ‘just because we lost to Sunderland’. I personally think the manager would be under pressure at almost every PL club if they were in the same position relative to resources.

It's how Keegan viewed it and I couldn't agree more. They are above us as you typed that though and the majority of fans wouldn't take your view. You just had to witness the scenes in the city at 9am a week past Sunday to see that. There's not another opponent in the world that gets that sort of reaction. Keegan knew exactly what this match meant to the fans as well as how to approach it which is why he had such a good record against them as he always had us so fired up. Hence why we're sat 12th and keep on getting done by mid table teams at home.

Don't think you got my meaning by beneath us there. Yeah they're currently above us in the league, but I'm talking way broader than that, our standards shouldn't be anchored or related to Sunderland in any way. Keegan knew what it meant, but he very vocally wanted us to move away from us measuring our success in relation to them. None of it means that losing to them isn't a failure, it is, but putting such an emphasis on the importance of winning or losing to them flatters them imo, and I'd rather we didn't do that and had rivals based on trying to succeed at the very top. For years it was the whole two bald men fighting over a comb thing.
TheInfiniteOdyssey
Considering Sunderland an irrelevance / unimportant, is something I’d again wager, serves as just pure copium from some to help process our absolutely pathetic contemporary record of results against them in the league.
