Yeah I think if Howe stays over the summer, nothing changes and we start next season like we've ended this one and he's gone at Christmas. I also don't hate him having the chance to prove me wrong though as he's done so much for the club previously.

Im surprised they are running this risk honestly, Eddie requires a very specific player type so replacing him after we back him again might prove to be our undoing.

We are probably the only team in the league without a dedicated 6 or 10.

It shouldn't be that much of a surprise tbh. Wilson has a strong relationship with Howe, and I don't think Hopkinson knows enough about football to override him. It really just comes down to hoping Wilson has a strong idea of which direction we should be heading.

There aren't many managers who would, at least not in the English game.

You're probably right there and I'd certainly not be accepting it on FM that's for sure, but I think most successful clubs now operate with a transfer hierarchy of some sort. I doubt there's many with the manager at the very top of the tree. Pretty sure Klopp chased Edwards out of Liverpool because they didn't always agree, though I suppose that's always going to happen.

I think the manager/head coach should have a big say, but not the say.

More years or the same years last summer set us back?

I don't think last summer set us back years. We fucked up replacing Isak but we can right that wrong this summer. We're potentially replacing several key players this summer so the scope for it to fuck us up if we get it wrong is bigger.

Still think Howe will be the the one to have the say, based on nothing but my own hunch. He doesn't strike me as the type of manager who'd accept players he didn't want, think he's far too proud for that.

What he needs to do this summer is just be absolutely ruthless and understand for the first time in his tenure, he is under a lot of pressure. Last summer was a fuck up so we should be entertaining any bids for the likes of Willock et al and starting fresh. Dan Burn is a living legend and a Newcastle hero but he should be slowly phased into being a very capable backup, alongside others. Murphy shouldn't be anywhere near the XI next season.

he doesn't even accept some of the players he *did* want :)

I think if anything the Summer taught us - without a project to sell to players - Eddie cannot attract players to the club.  It's one of the reasons I am not convinced he's the man for the rebuild.

I've always wondered if the 4-3-3 hair-on-fire high press tactics scared more technically gifted players away. I'm a novice, but it doesn't seem like it would be an appealing style of play to an 'elite' player.

But more than anything I think it's Eddie's stubbornness and/or inability to try something new that disqualifies him.

In my view, his only hope is to keep doing what he knows (4-3-3) and hope things turn around. Otherwise:

- If he slogs through with the same tactics and we keep losing, he's screwed. We lost 12 league games all last year. We're at 15 and counting now.

- If he changes tactics and it works, he'll be screwed for waiting so long to change.

- If he changes tactics and it doesn't work, he's equally screwed.

Mind you, he's lost the team already and he's out of ideas, so I think we'll see much of the same from here on out.

Nobody should really want to rely on football knowledge of their CEO though.

Agree. That's why Wilson's role is very important and he needs to have a strong idea of what type of players we will be needing to build a successful team over the next few years.

Sorry but I think if Howe fucked this summer up, and end up being sacked early next season, his legacy will truely be  ruined

I really despise this “get in line” sentiment.

Howe won't be solely responsible for the summer.

Ian I think we both already know based on the summer gone that the truth doesn't matter if the shit hits the fan.

Notwithstanding I'm pretty firmly Howe-out at this point, I do think if we experience no pickup at the end of this season, plus have a slow start next season in terms of return on points, it will get ugly quite fast in terms of fan sentiment, if Howe remains in post this summer.

He already managed to turn one team of absolute shite into a brilliant team so no reason he won't be able to do it again. This season has been a shambles but I am pretty certain that if he is still here this time next year we will be on the verge of qualifying for Europe again.

The problem with that is, he's also turned that same brilliant team back into shite so it's not a certainty that we just get the good next year.

Atrocious decision if true, and one that could kill the project altogether in the long term if more Elanga-esque train wrecks are bought in the summer.

Seems like they haven't got a clue what to do so are just going to persevere and keep fingers tightly crossed that it doesn't all blow up completely.

I expect a very difficult end to the season TBH, I don’t think it’s realistic to expect much else. I think the excitement will hopefully return once we refresh the squad and take a few months off.

Personally I would be just as nervous under a new manager, although I am nervous now.

It might even destroy the entire concept of association football.

It's crazy to me (as a pessimistic person by nature) how many people are putting a negative spin on Eddie being given a proper DoF to work to rebuild the first team across an entire summer after what happened last summer.
