I just don't believe things work so linearly, to say we're exactly where we are in 20/21 based solely on league position just isn't accurate at all in my opinion

Well I dont want to totally derail the thread but its 100% accurate. End of 20/21 season under Bruce we finished 12th losing 17 games. End of this season we finished 12th losing 17 games. I appreciate its a bit more nuanced than that but that's the facts.

I stand by my original point, if the club are serious about 2030 ambitions and its not just some PR media bullshit then I'd expect a new manager in very soon.

How did he get on in the Champions League that season? Can't remember. Decent showing in the cup?

Don’t see it at all unfortunately. It’s all well and good saying “if it hasn’t improved ten games in make a change” but that’s more money wasted and another season probably written off.

If the club were going to make a change we’d know about it by now.

A short story #NUFC have had 3 special managers in my lifetime KK, SBR and Eddie Howe We replaced the first two with Dalglish and Souness And set the club back a decade each time The End

Anyone who heard Hopkinson's 2030 comments and didn't think "well that's fucking stupid, I'll ignore that" is a loon. Not possible for us to create our own lofty destiny so swiftly with these financial rules. And yet we have some fans choosing to frame any NUFC development in that context.

Disingenuous, thick or weird I dunno but it's bloody tedious for certain.

That’s more on Hopkinson than any fan tbf, he’s repeated a couple of times since as well.

Fans don't have enough common sense to take it with a huge pinch of salt and basically disregard it? How do they expect us to achieve that under these rules?

I don't disagree his comments are fucking stupid but we don't need to match his stupidity.

I'm not sure about that, but I'll follow your lead and try not to derail this any further

Aye, I don’t think any sensible fan believes him. His comments where ridiculous though, he’s made quite a few so far.

It’ll be a sad sight if our form continues next season and the crowd gets ugly.

We also replaced them mid season, certainly in Robson's case there was a number of managerial changes that summer and we were left with a shit choice.

KK wanted to quit summer of 96, who knows if we would have been able to entice Bobby at that point, but certainly would have of we had held out until summer of 97.

The worst thing we can do is to start the season with Eddie then be looking to change before Christmas.

Bobby Robson should've been sacked the close season before.  Sacking him was justified with his utter bizarre decisions across 03/04 season, the replacement defied any sense of logic.

I've said this a few times to the point of utter boredom.

But like they're so ridiculous they should be completely ignored, judge him on actual progress evidenced by the moves he makes and not the words that leaves his mouth.

Like if the club makes progress on and off the pitch due to things he's involved with, cool.

If not, question alternatives. But I couldn't give a flying monkeys what he says, it's not important.

By far my biggest fear in all of this. He absolutely doesn’t deserve that but a slow start and it’s 100% happening.

The away end yesterday apparently turned a little, matter of time before it does at home. We’re quite lucky the season ended when it did for that reason.

Best I managed after saying I'd take a break last summer is deleting the shortcut then just searching for the app 3 minutes later. Pathetic.

The lesson in terms of what happened with Bobby Robson is ‘don’t wait until early the following season to get rid of a manager’

The lesson in terms of what happened with Kevin Keegan is ‘when a manager is burned out and repeatedly offers their resignation, maybe listen to it the first time’

The irony of your argument is that their successors caused the club to drop like a stone into upper midtable - Dalglish finished 13th, Souness 14th.  We didn’t even need to change manager to drop off and ‘set ourselves back a decade’ - we saved money by the current manager and his recruitment friends doing that of their own accord.

We haven’t had a bad season either, according to the same poster.

Yep.  Dalglish, Bruce and Souness were shit for finishing 13th and 14th tbf.  We finished 12th, so that must be an achievement.

Dalglish at the time was one of three managers who’d won the title with two different clubs, and had qualified for the CL the year before.  His track record knocked Howe’s into a cocked hat. On that basis, the appointment wasn’t the mistake - sacking him was.

Sir Bobby did great over the piece, don't think anybody has said otherwise and it wasn't an assessment of his performance over that time that resulted in the club sacking him - it was trying to arrest the slide we were on allied with the unlikelihood that in his final year it could be turned around.

Our goose was already cooked on that score by that point whether we kept Sir Bobby for the rest of his contract or brought in either Venables or Souness. Only another elite appointment that summer would have given us a chance.

On the basis of all the evidence of watching Dalglish's Newcastle, however, sacking him wasn't a mistake.

100% agreed - 13th place despite him getting us into the CL the year before, beating Barca in the CL and going on a cup run weren’t close to being good enough.  We looked to be flirting with relegation at one point.

I just find it ironic seeing folks try to justify not changing manager due to the drop-off, yet all the excuses applied to Howe could just as easily have been applied to Dalglish - and in 97/98 we could recover from a bad season much quicker due to the lack of FFP.
