Maybe I'm a little tainted by his recent performances, unless he's being asked to stay up top on the cb's shoulders no matter what and where the ball is, which i find hard to believe, I can't help but feel like him being isolated is a bit of his own fault as well? We don't know what he's being instructed to do, he's obviously out of form mind. Couple of glaring issues are our wide players love to sit very wide and given our central midfield is pretty flat and our defenders love to back off it often leaves him with a 30 yard radius of emptiness. I think overall our team needs a lot of work which we were expecting last summer. I remember the reporting around January this year that big changes were planning for the summer and obviously nothing materialised, rather like our stadium and our training ground and out adoption of multi club

That small moment in time where him, Perez and Almiron linked up was marvellous to watch. Lush Vlad Posted yesterday at 11:45 Share Posted yesterday at 11:45 Hardly doubt with how guarded he is at press conferences. That he will come out and say "yeah, the midfield hasn't been working at all. I'm going to change formation and maybe drop certain players". If he genuinely thinks we don't need to make adjustments and he carries on as it is. Then I think we'll eventually come fully unstuck and he'll be replaced. Chris_R Posted yesterday at 11:50 Share Posted yesterday at 11:50 Personally I'd like to see Joelinton play as a 6 with Tonali and Bruno ahead.
Yorkie Posted yesterday at 11:53 Share Posted yesterday at 11:53 I can live with him doubling down and trying to make it work at this point. Obviously it's not working right now, but there's such an abundance and variety of attributes across those three individuals that it should work given the right instructions. It's early in the season and it's not like we've been beaten by some mugs; Chelsea are annoyingly good with arguably the best attacking midfielder in the division. If we're sat here in a month's time and it's still as dysfunctional then you really will have to doubt his judgement.

If he continues to press high with two really slow central defenders, it's difficult to see how we stop conceding goals on the turnover. I suppose if we bang in a few goals before we get countered, that would be the plan.

I'm sure he knows there needs to be adjustments, he's not stupid. But they're still really our only viable 3 for starting in midfield, it's just a question of getting them to play better or changing the shape. The three of them will still play. I don't mean change the players. They are the best midfield 3 by some way if we persist on playing with this formation. Hence why I mentioned adjustments and not changing personnel. If we changed formation slightly, then I can't have Joelinton playing as the deeper midfielder or in a 2, at all. So then I think there is an argument for bringing other players in. Like TRon alludes to above. If we carry on playing high and wide in and out of possession with the two 8s and having Bruno as the only player available to receive passes from the back 4. Then we are going to carry on getting exposed on and off the ball.

But the evidence suggests they are not very good. We could at least attempt some variation or work the odd short corner or free kick now and then. Especially if like Howe says in that piece, we are missing some key players that help with corners. Sort of related, but I always find most of our free kicks to be dreadful and have been since he joined. First season I was fine with it, we were fighting for survival and he was new into the club part-way through the season and maybe the players suited it. But they haven't massively improved the whole time he has been here. If we get one anywhere near the halfway line. We always load it up for the lofted ball up the middle or a long diagonal to one of the CB's. We take an age to set it up and it feels very Stoke. I wouldn't mind if it was effective, but it really isn't. I can't think of many other teams in the league that do it regularly other than Brentford and maybe Forest, at times? joeyt Posted yesterday at 13:20 Share Posted yesterday at 13:20 Everton do that as well but it's more effective as Tarkowski is much better attacking them than Dan Burn who either gives away a foul or has no idea which direction he's heading it in

Likelylad Posted yesterday at 13:47 Share Posted yesterday at 13:47 It’s a question of quality for me. I’m sure Tindall is good at certain things but is he really best in class? Or anywhere near it? Howe clearly has a small circle he trusts and if you want to be top tier you need to hire top tier individuals and it feels like Howe would be somewhat resistant to that. Ronaldo Posted yesterday at 13:56 Share Posted yesterday at 13:56 Tindall clearly doesn’t have a clue, man. Lower league wind up merchant, not someone who should be remotely responsible for anything tactical.
Cf Posted yesterday at 14:07 Share Posted yesterday at 14:07 Was avoiding this thread over the weekend but now it's calmed down a bit thought i'd add my own twopenneth. Obviously the vibes around the club don't feel great at the moment, but I'm still willing to put that mainly down to PSR. With PSR in mind has our transfer business been perfect? No. Was it ever going to be? No. We started with a squad decimated over the years with very few saleable assets. Howe has enough about him and enough in the bank that I'm happy for him to be given the chance to turn things around. We've had two windows now with essentially no signings. We've got Mitchell - January is a test of whether they've worked together to sort out some of the most pressing issues in the squad. Given the squad as it is currently I'm not sure who else we'd get in that would have the squad as it is now performing at a better level. They'd need a transfer window or two and at this point I'd rather go for consistency and give them to Howe. It's not to say I have 100% blind loyalty. There are obvious deficiencies which need to be ironed out. But this isn't the same situation as sticking with a Pardew or a Bruce for instance.
