What I don't understand is, when Murphy scored why didn't we take to

West Ham. A team in their situation is

the perfect example of stepping on their necks but we just stood around and kept passing it to each.

Totally agree. We stood off and looked like we were "posing" for "posing" sake. Passing around and trying to look individually great. We are a TEAM. Eddie will sort it no doubt. I honestly think there are already at least TWO BAD APPLES that need weeded out........... no I'm not saying.

It’s hard to see where we go from here. Our away performances are actually getting worse somehow. Howe definitely has problems, today was as bad as it’s been under him and it didn’t look like he knew how to fix it.
We’ve been fairly bad for a while, I’m unconvinced we signed the right players in the window to fix things. Elanga being one for example. We will undoubtedly looks better when hall/tino return but at the moment in the league it’s hard to see where the wins come from. Especially away.

The game pretty much pivoted on the decision to do this, which surely was deliberate and presumably done so to manage the load on the players. We sat back immediately, but because we were so poor on the ball, we dug ourselves into a hole and couldn't get any control whatsoever, and they capitalised.

One of the most joyful things about Howe's Newcastle, at it's best, is that ability to step on necks - like you say. Scoring twice quickly. But it ain't happening when the goal is to passively defend a lead.

Just feels like we're saving ourselves for the cup ties at the expense of playing with any intensity at all in the league, and it's really harming us.

Managing the four competition season pretty poorly so far.

I mean you say that but we're still comfortably in all 4 competitions and looking likely to progress and we still have 28 league games to go...

That was Eddie Howe’s worst performance since he came here.

We changed formation 4/5 times during the game. Players playing out of position. 4/5 different RBs. 4 CBs playing across the backline.  Poor players playing 90 mins.

That was a complete and utter mess and rivals anything under Bruce. That said, it should be a one off and hopefully he gets his act together.

It was. Actually was the sort of things I'd expect one or two posters who are constasntly calling for changes would do. Just seemed like a kneejerk reaction from him because he was pissed off at how the half ended.

That's probably fair.

What I'm getting at is that we're doing well in the cups possibly at the expense of our league form. The worst performance I've ever seen from us under Howe came in the league, four days after we delivered a brilliant one in the cup, in which we absolutely bullied a much better team than today's opponents.

We're Cup Team-ariffic atm. It's a nice throwback in a way. To my granddad's era like, but still.

It's pretty obvious that after the nuclear levels of injuries we suffered in our last Champions League season that Howe has us conserving energy instead of turning up the tempo when we have the lead, our incessant pressing in the previous campaign has devastating effects on the squad.

We haven’t  fully pressed since that season tbh. We didn’t fully commit to it last season either. Makes some of the signings a bit strange imo, if we aren’t going to go full on with the press, we should have targeted a different profile imo.

Oh and you're not wrong in that regard. We're only 6 points away from the top 4 though and there's a long way to go though.

FWIW though, I'm personally not expecting us to reach CL again not if we progress in all the cups up until the FA Cup, which is looking likely.

I think we're developing strength in depth but given the injuries to our two key full backs it's left us as a bit exposed in terms of attacking (cover) threat from full back which is turns out, seems pretty pivotal for us. Both there and at CF.

We really need Tino, Hall and Wissa back and we may become a different animal.

They pressed us and we couldn’t handle it, every time we got the ball we would lose it quickly, so we ended up not having a choice but to get behind the ball. Same problem we’ve had for the last couple of years.
