Kieran Trippier: Galatasaray 'set to make offer' (Romano/Hope)

Recommended Posts

If the report is right and at the end of the season Galatasaray are willing to come back in then that's the time to do the deal. We've not the biggest squad in terms of numbers or quality. The sales of Kelly and Miggy make good financial sense but it's a slight gamble with Miggy's sale. In defence Botman's only just back from what used to be career ending injury and Lascelles isn't near to full fitness yet. Also the leadership Trippier has brought off the field is going to be key in the run in, especially with our current inconsistency and with a potential cup final if we get past Arsenal I've a feeling we're going to need him.

if he wants to go and Krafth is coming back then fine, I guess. I just don't get why we aren't signing anyone

Either we are planning a big summer, or we need to sell to avoid a points deduction and a mad June rush again.

You really still don't get it, with all that's been said about the matter?!

TBF, I'd like to see a clear explanation of the actual figures

nah, can't be fucked with looking at spreadsheets to understand psr. Nobody has really provided a reasonable explanation of how we were bidding £60m plus for Guehi in the summer and now we've got nowt despite sales.

Okay, I'm sure the club will be happy to share. Get in touch.

I assume it’s all part of future spend in summer and us being proactive with sales for once. No point keeping players when they’re not really contributing to the season in a positive way.

It doesn't need looking at spreadsheets. The reason has been mentioned numerous times in the last few days.

Exactly. I remember Mitchell talking about 'clearing the decks' when he came in at Moncao. Moving on Almiron and potentially Kelly and Trippier for reasonable fees would represent a step in that direction for us. It's exactly what we need.

It's been explained a thousand times.

If we'd bought big in the summer, someone like Gordon, Bruno or Isak would have left to balance things. There were very strong rumours about Gordon to Liverpool, and Bruno had his release clause. We've been over this a lot.

So we can only buy after 30 June this year, but we can't spend that much without first selling a purple because we miss out on European football and can't generate enough cash through commercial activity because of APT rules and the fact we miss out on extra income from European football.

We need a bigger better squad to qualify for European football which would generate better commercial income but are restricted because of PSR.

Fuckin shite this

yeah, I’ve heard this explanation and it doesn’t make much sense to me.

Gordon was going to be sold but we sold Minteh and Anderson instead to solve that one. The Gordon rumours had gone died down before we started bidding for Guehi. Was similar with Isak who wasn’t really linked strongly anywhere, but there were tenuous links to Liverpool around the same time as the Gordon links. This was all during the Euros. We were still going after Guehi in August.

Likewise Bruno’s release clause had expired long before we were bidding for Guehi.

I think it’s probably more likely we that we have to get maximum value for money with our signings, and that’s hard to do in January so we’re just not bothering with incomings. Outgoings are fine because we can take advantage of some desperate teams. The problem I have with that approach is that we need some quality to come in this season. Everyone will want out come summer if we don’t have Europe again.

It's not exactly right, but think of PSR as a 12 month long game. And the idea is you have to balance the books by the end of that 12 months to win the game.

The Bruno/Gordon/Minteh stuff was all part of the previous game, which finished on June 30th last year.

Then a new game started fresh in July in which we wanted to buy Guehi right at the beginning, giving us nearly 12 months to balance the books again before the game finished.

That's basically the idea of why we tried to spend £60m in the summer but not now. Spend it today and realistically we've got a month in June to sell sell sell and avoid losing the game, which is tight.

Not that I completely believe this explanation myself, mind. I think other ideas remain possible, too. None of them seriously involve us spending £60m this month though.
