Choppy Chop Chop Posted Monday at 13:03 Share Posted Monday at 13:03 (edited) its not so unique The football teams who famously sing "Wise Men Say" (a reference to the line "Can't Help Falling in Love") include Sunderland, Hull City, and Huddersfield Town. The song was adopted by these teams as a chant, with Sunderland and Hull City particularly known for their long-standing tradition of singing it. The song was a popular anthem among football grounds from as early as the 1960s, including with supporters of Sunderland, Swindon Town, Hull City, Huddersfield Town, Preston North End, Swansea City, Airdrie United and Raith Rovers. Don't forget their iconic pre-match usage of the 1996 top 40 hit "Ready to Go" by Republica which they named their forum after. I've heard they talk about that in America all the time too. Wolfcastle Posted Monday at 14:03 Share Posted Monday at 14:03 Trying to force an anthem like everything else. Like an end, nickname or regional iconography its an organic thing. They just dont have any of. Ourselves, Liverpool, Man United, Arsenal, BIrmingham, Norwich, Coventry, Portsmouth, Leeds, Southampton, Man City, West Ham off the top of my head have famous long standing songs commonly associated to the clubs by media and other fans that have been perennially sung at most games for generations. Even we didn't know that's their tune.
Fatwax Posted Monday at 14:06 Share Posted Monday at 14:06 Were they filming a new series this season? Feel like whenever they try to do something like that it backfires. I remember when they had a 360 degree photo of the ground at a set moment in the game and it just so happened to be when the opposition scored. Can remember Swansea fans singing it at SJP back in the 90’s from the Milburn Paddock. Sang it much more in tune than the these daft cunts as well. Edit just read that thread on groomers and it’s page 7 before anyone acknowledges one of the most famous, original and local songs linked with a British football club, funny that. Not surprisingly they would also sing Rolf Harris's "Two little boys".

Never heard them sing it, but it’s fair to say it must’ve been around a while for that. Seems apt that their ‘anthem’ is something that only winos sing. bobbydazzla
Yesterday, whilst amusing myself reading an article about Sunderland having 2 of the lowest points totals out of the worst 6 in Premier League history, I also learned that the two teams who have the joint record for most own goals scored in a top flight game are Sunderland 2003 and Sunderland 2014 A 3-1 home defeat against Charlton where the makems scored all 4 goals And the 8-0 defeat at Southampton where they put 3 past their own keeper Bewtifil Edited 16 hours ago by bobbydazzla

No, I was just pointing out why a few of them like to claim the song as theirs, and that the of the list of places listed in the quote 2 were in County Durham at one time. There was a time when Keegan was our manager the first time loads of clubs used the tune with different words, it works on so many levels. The UK should adopt it as our national anthem, just leave the lyrics the same. Mind, owt would be better than the current dirge. It's a fair bit closer to Newcastle than it is Sunderland... Flogging myself there in the rain on Monday night confirmed it The original Blaydon races were rowing events on the Tyne from Newcastle to Blaydon or at least that is what a play at the Theatre Royal taught me a few years back... OpenC
"Blaydon isn't in Newcastle therefore Blaydon Races isn't about Newcastle" is about the same level of mackematics that allows them to draw in tiny pit villages in the wilds of County Durham as legit support, but at the same time if we weren't born on Fenwicks' doorstep then there's probably a more appropriate club to support than NUFC
