Eddie Howe's reaction to Sam Fender winning the Mercury Prize for best album last night:

“Massive congratulations to Sam. I know it’s a big, big award. He’s so popular in our dressing room - his music is playing all the time.

“I’ve become very accustomed to his voice and his work and he’s outstanding.”

Sam Fender, who mackems "heard' wasn't a Newcastle fan until the takeover (source, trust me bro) having the 'best day of his life", meeting his childhood hero Alan Shearer, in a video posted on the BBC Sport YouTube channel years before the takeover when we were absolutely fucking shite.

Because their very reason for existing is to be the exact opposite of Newcastle. Every single aspect of their lives involves Newcastle, they have no other identity whatsoever. They're whatever Newcastle aren't, they believe in whatever Newcastle don't, they can't tell you who or what they are or what they believe in without mentioning Newcastle. They're the lump of shit hanging out of the parasite's arsehole of the thing that's currently living on Newcastle

...and they know it. And it eats them up from the inside every single day of their lives. They're completely unknown, minor and irrelevant without Newcastle

Incorrect. They do have an identity. They like to be known as "the city by the sea" these days, although just from this season. Once that novelty wears off it'll be something else....

Actually hang on a minute. You're spot on. They do have no identity. They never have. They even tried to turn the name "mackem" from what was always a derogatory term as a piss take of a disgusting accent into some form of positive identity for them.

Their stadium name is stolen from a far more illustrious club from another Country (who we play on Tuesday) and even their nickname "the black cats" bears no resemblance to their club.

When you think about it you can see why they are aways in a state of anger and are consumed by hatred. I dare say I'd be the same if I'd been unfortunate enough to support them.

I don’t mind admitting that he does irk me somewhat.

For me it was when he turned up on This Morning in a borrowed jacket claiming he’s a dyed in the wool Newcastle fan despite never attending a game ever and every subsequent gig he’s ever done is now awash with anti Sunderland flags.

Aside from that I quite enjoy his music, genuinely.

How could you possibly even know this you bitter little bastard?

I'd also like proof of his gigs being "awash" with anti Sunderland flags otherwise you'll be called out for the lying bastard that you are I'm afraid.

I've seen him half a dozen times and don't think I've ever seen anything anti-Sunderland. Not ever. It's just so childish man. Mackems need to get a grip.

But it wouldn't be like them to randomly make stuff up to suit a certain agenda would it?

Free as in "all right now" ?

Aaaaanyway, always liked The Futureheads.

Their version of Hounds of Love is easily one of the best covers ever. I remember they had a random segment on a TV music show when they were just breaking through. They filmed it in The Baltic so I'm guessing they are dead to any self respecting Sunderland fan.

No point in trying to even be accurate with that when the rest is absolute fucking drivel anyway.

Never understood why the Kane Gang didn't endure and sell more. Really liked them. Great sound.

Canny lads for Mackems. Were signed to Kitchenware when we worked in St Thomas St Stables back in the day. Very exciting when they were in with Prefab Sprout. Good days.

Christ, even the Mackems that seemed sensible are susceptible to being complete stereotypes.
