I just think you have to look at the modern game and accept having a keeper with top feet is a must. Modern game? Fuck off man. It's a game of football and the goalkeeper's main responsibility (just to remind you all) is to keep the fucking ball from hitting our net! Pope is excellent at that! Was chatting the other day and said this. A lot of us (and I include myself in this) were looking forward to Trafford for the footwork, and potentially discounting that the Holy Father is still very, very good at the bread and butter GK stuff
Sibierski
It can’t be understated how having an extra passing option for the defence can transform a side. Like Donarumma is not a ball playing keeper, but he’s still competent at it and PSG use him loads because it helps entice a press to then bypass, enabling their forwards to attack more often 1 v 1. Against the lesser sides, they don’t press us, able to confidently invite them on would help us more in those games than just having an attacking mid. Like Pope is great at saving, but he’s not even remotely competent with the ball at his feet.
Famous Nick
better showing than vs Celtic, thats for sure. up next is a poor opponent, we should win that, vs K League team, whatever that is on Wednesday and then a game vs Tottenham in South Korea too. we gradually need to get better in these games and get up to speed. no striker on tour is a joke tho very far from ideal if we lose Isak and only get a proper replacement end of August. Villa away, Liverpool home, Leeds away is a hard start for PL, we need 4/5 points as a bare minimum here imo. oldtype
I left home a decade ago so I won’t be there to celebrate when the squad finally arrives, but I just want to say: the Korean NUFC supporters club has been continuously operational for over twenty years now, despite the club visiting a grand total of zero times, generally making no effort whatsoever to market itself, and having provided little to nothing to celebrate on the pitch. There is nothing even vaguely approaching this level of support for any other club outside of the top six (and frankly we’d be bigger than Spurs if Son wasn’t playing for them). In particular, Jeongmin, who’s been organizing everything the whole time (even during the darkest of the Ashley years where weak-minded folks like myself completely fucked off), is one of the most devoted supporters this club has ever known, and I hope the appropriate people have been in contact with him. Asian fanbases are no longer a bunch of glory hunter casuals to be exploited for shirt sales: many of us chose our clubs in the early 00s, and have been supporters continuously from boyhood to middle age. We’ve been watching every match and following every transfer rumor since back when we were all sure that Shola was going to play for England one day. Now that the club is actually trying to expand its global footprint, I hope it understands that they have these folks as a resource to help identify what about the story of Newcastle United has been so appealing that the it could attract loyal fans around the world even when it wasn’t trying particularly hard to do so. There’s a ton of untapped potential here. I imagine that’s part of why PIF wanted to buy us in the first place.

Dyeyzzon
I’ve just flown home from Singapore and it was the experience of a lifetime. Just some highlights: - Queuing two hours in a mall to see the Carabao Cup as well as Shay and Shola. Security had to step in when the lines backed up all the way to the other mall. Feet killed me but it was all worth it for a once-in-a-lifetime picture. - You still couldn’t get kits customised in the Philippines, but I’m glad I found a store which agreed to do my personal kits from last season with Burn on the back, in the correct NUFC set, and with Carabao cup patches. - The Singaporean fan group was gathering all the Asian supporter clubs in the steps of the stadium for a “Toon Army Asia Alliance” family photo. Philippines still has no fan club so I initially stood and watched. Their leader urged me to join and said “you’re one of us now”. It meant a lot given how I spent two decades essentially on my own here. - Screamed way more than I should for Elanga’s goal then found myself just teary eyed after. So that is what it feels like. - Overall, we looked sharp. If anything it encouraged me that whoever it is up front, our style is still there. The strengths are still in dominating the middle and rapid wingers with top level fullbacks. Once we sort out who plays up top, I think we’d still be potent. Understand the notion that such a tour could be tiring to fly around and forces us to play top teams without building morale first. But after decades of staying up for football in ungodly hours in this side of the world, I just felt it was all worth it to be part of it all, unlocking core memories for a lifetime. oldtype
Tips for your first trip to SJP: (1) whatever you do, do not get caught on sky sports camera during the match. (2) if you are anywhere within the city limits, assume that someone from the forum is secretly filming you on their phone. (3) if someone shouts out your forum nickname while you're in a queue outside the ground, that person is a serial killer. Actual serious tip: Try to work an away match into it as well (assuming it's even possible to get tickets these days) because being in the away end is a whole different experience. Also, when I did it, this happened: Edited July 29, 2025 by oldtype

But thanks everyone - the Singapore trip just left me wanting to go for the real thing - complete with soaking in the culture and all. Edit: Another thing the SG fan group told me is to try finding more Filipino/Philippines-based fans, gather once and maybe start a supporters' group here. Our club is apparently aggressive now in establishing these official supporter groups, and are responsive to emails to get such groups certified and truly connected to the club. The Indo fans even unfurled their certification email banner which shows how much they value it. Edited July 29, 2025 by Dyeyzzon
