Overrated players

Recommended Posts

Given and Pope we're two keepers playing in the wrong eras. Pope would have been one of the best in league in the 90s/00s (not that he isnt now) his shot stopping, sweeper, commanding style was a much better fit for then.

Given would have flourished even more in the modern era, playing out from the back and modern coaching.

Both great keepers, neither really managed to break into the elite category but really good a consistent. Both cracking blokes too.

Vidic.

He was an incredible centre back. Theres probably been only 10 PL CBs that have been better than him.

Terry

Rio

VVD

Kompany

Campbell (prime)

Im already struggling to think of anyone whos definitely better than Vidic after those.

Stam. I'm always surprised that people forget about Jaap Stam.

Carvalho?

Carvalho did come to mind. Great CB. Woodgate from a pure talent perspective was amazing, sadly he was just too injury prone to consider.

You have to have a body of work and Woodgates body didnt work, sadly.

Same as Ledley King.

VVD for me. When he’s hungry and Liverpool are clicking, excellent defender, at times best CB in the league. But if he’s been there 6 seasons, there’s been big chunks of 3, where hes lazy, waits for others to stop danger instead of positioning himself, only sprints at the end when there’s no chance to stop it and slides into the net and blames Trent or Konate or whoever. That trait alone rules him out of best ever CB lists. It’s the opposite of what a captain does.

I’ll throw in Sane and Coman as well, punditry seemed to rate them as world class wingers , think Bayern would have won 1 or 2 more CLs if they’d recognised they weren’t hungry or reliable enough. Fine for bundesliga, not to the relied on in the big CL Games. Oh, Bellingham, think hes well overrated, has his talents, but the hype machine would make you think hes going to be Zidane with more goals.

He simply isn’t as good as so many CB’s the Premier League has had, Terry, Ferdinand, Campbell to name just a few. Keown would like a word as well. That’s just in the Premier League.

We also have to factor in how VVD went missing a year or so after his injury, and every other fan aside from Liverpool fans will mention his disciplinary record and his habit of going in with an elbow and getting away with it time and time again.

I'm canny fascinated by those players that are all over the place with how they're rated.

There's those that are deemed so over-rated for whatever reason that they end up being criminally underrated (Beckham, Henderson)
Those that always get labelled as underrated but either aren't, or get called underrated so often that it's clear they aren't (Makelele, Kante)

There are other categories like that as well, I just can't remember

Agree think Beckham got so overrated he became underrated. Brilliant player, brilliant attitude, apart from pace and heading, he did everything well.

You saying Keown was better than VVD?

Kevin Nolan - poor footballer, but a good leader and goalscorer.

Ryan Giggs - fantastic in his prime, but started 13 games the year he won POTY. Absolute joke.

Danny Simpson - Somehow won the PL, as he shit himself every time he crossed the halfway line.

Ederson - Probably a better outfield player than keeper.

Just about every current Arsenal player.

Another thread topic. But when people talk about hardest footballers. Big Dunc must be up there. Absolute lunatic and a big bastad too.

Heard an interview with Ferguson where he basically said Gordon got the better of him in the ring. I mean age difference and time spent boxing are both relevant, and doubt he would lose a real fight with him, but still impressive from our young intellectual.

Naaah. Given was one of the top 3-4 keepers in his day. Pope isn't.

I think Given being overrated might have been a good shout if this is the popular opinion of him like. He was nowhere near the top 'keepers of his day.

Fantastic shot stopper, but beyond that average to good, and poor on crosses/commanding our box because he was always glued to his line. It was only when we got a 'keeper who commanded his box that I noticed the difference.

Never got Darren Anderton at all. If Balotelli had no personality have been seen more clearly as a second-tier journeyman forward all of his career instead of belatedly. Michael Owen was monstrously overrated in his prime, they were desperate to put him in the fat Ronaldo echelon circa 98.
