Colo doesn't get in ahead of our 4 other CDs this season

Need to see more of Thiaw but it looks like he's going to get there too; as I'd take all of our (starting) CBs under Howe post summer 2022 ahead of Coloccini.

I’m sure they have, they got a lot of plaudits. There’s subjectivity to this but the likes of Lampard and Gerrard didn’t run games the way players like Modric, Xavi, and Pirlo did. They racked up goals and assists and were better playing in free roles or behind the striker, but as actual CM’s I didn’t think either was particularly good. Gerrard in particular was often very wasteful with the ball IMO, which is a big negative to me. Scholes could run games from CM, but obviously had big flaws without the ball.

I’d say Gerrard absolutely ran games. Had the ability to take a game by the scruff of the neck. Rafa said he was the best player he managed.

Tactically he would leave gaps in behind,  but if you have, players like Alonso and Mascheramo behind you it’s not a problem. He was also pretty versatile too, great on the right wing and even an effective full back.

He ran games against us time and again

None of them have ever written an apology letter like Coloccini did though, that should count for something.

None of them have his hair game either. Does that count for something? 😁

Not in the same way that players like Modric and Xavi ran games. Gerrard was a very dynamic and athletic player and was always looking to force the ball forward and get a goal or an assist. It could be devastating or he could keep pinging long diagonal balls out of play. It was perfect for a Liverpool team which wasn’t the best, but if you tried to put him in a team like the one Xavi played in he’d look very average IMO.

It’s not true like.

Gerrard ran games. Loads of them.  He decided if it was time to pass it around. Attack. Everything. It’s a different style but he dominated all the same. Vieira did it a different way, Kante a different way. Kroos a different way.

Barcelona is a specific style. And Xavi played a different role of which he might be a GOAT at.

I do think he got too used to playing hero ball Gerrard. And he was tactically ill disciplined. But he was THAT guy. Maybe a little over rated by some but he was brilliant. Scholes was brilliant.

Normally with this topic, I nominate Rice or Salah, but for a change I'll pitch in Cristiano Ronaldo.

A very good player of course, but not the GOAT, as he's sometimes cracked up to be.

I don't get how anyone can say Ronaldo is overrated, without doubt the 2nd greatest player of the modern generation behind Messi.

He scored 450 goals in 9 seasons at Madrid before moving to Juve and scored over 100 in 3 seasons.

I’m not saying he’s a bad player, he was clearly a very very good player that could be a match winner. But if we’re talking about the elite CM’s, which is a group many people rate him in, he was too selfish too often for me.

Sorry TCD but you need to wash your mouth out with fuckin soapy bleach. Pope isn't half the keeper Given was like. Never will be.

Different eras but Given was elite. Best keeper we've had in my lifetime by a mile. He genuinely would make saves that he had no right to make.

If you want a Newcastle player id say Ginola. We had the best of him and he's forever entwined with the entertainers but his career was nowhere near what it should have been. His image, the fact he scored the odd breathtaking goal and he went on to play for media darlings Spurs meant he had such a high profile. Ruel Fox had more career assists.

Was the best player in the country as voted for by his fellow pros two seasons after he left us.

He was one of the best 10 or so CMs in the world for about 5-6 years maybe longer.

He was elite.

We’re talking semantics now, but to me elite and world class would be interchangeable, and that means being among the top few in your position. He was never that in my book. Was he top 10 at times? Possibly yeah.
