Yorkie
I wouldn't have a single issue with Howe being the kingpin when it comes to first team recruitment. I get that Sporting Directors are supposed to last longer than managers, and the theory - therefore - is that it would more logical for them to craft an identity and recruit based on that. That argument is of course flawed by the fact that our Sporting Director jumped ship after five fucking minutes. Just give Howe the keys to the kingdom. He knows what he's doing and whatever identity we're crafting is being built on his image anyway.

Kanji
Howe was our de facto sporting director that led to the signings of Trippier, Bruno, Burn, Wood, Targett. >> that window we would never have signed Burn had we gotten Botman AND (yes) Diego Carlos. And while the jury is out on Targett now and most would deem him excess to requirements -- he was fantastic in that loan spell and then has more or less been injured for 2 seasons whilst Burn created a brilliant partnership with Joelinton and WIllock. Presumably the leg work for Botman, Isak, Pope, were done under Howe before Ashworth came on.
Kimbo
It’s very hard to know from the outside who is identifying and pushing for which players. I tend to favour whoever wanted Bruno and Botman (I always assumed Nickson, but who knows). Whoever is involved needs to understand the restraints we’re operating under, and that means favouring markets that offer better value for money. We can’t afford to have a domestic bias. Howe isn’t scouting and putting ground work in for players, guy is busy training and working on plans for opposition and day to day management of team to be doing that stuff Then again, maybe that’s why the form has nose dived and we stick with same tactics, because he’s too busy on teams calls with agents and putting in ground work for summer transfers. They were basically saying jobs for the boys. Probably a load of shite though. You could aim the same accusation at Ashworth moving to Man U tbh, with him being good mates with Dave Brailsford and even to some extent Sir Jim Ratshit. KaKa
Seems Nickson is highly experienced and has a substantial database of players and reports on them from what has been put out there. He was also involved in travelling to meet with players before tying up deals. It might be due to his stature we are not looking for a recruitment specialist but more of a technical director? Howe and Nickson seemed to work well regarding recruitment early on, with support from both Mehrad and Amanda in tying up deals. Might be we're leaning more into that going forward due to the early success.

KaKa
Just a reminder that while other teams and their managers were unsure Howe was certain enough to sign both Bruno and Isak for us, two of the most technically gifted players we've seen at the club in a long while. Botman again, is a technically gifted centre back. Even Gordon has shown he is far more than just a pace merchant as some on here labelled him when we went for him. Tonali will prove to be another once he comes into the team. This narrative that Howe just goes for physical/work rate only players is nonsense. Most of the players that we have in that sort of mould were here before he joined and he has just made good use of them. A narrative easily dispelled once you actually look at the signings he has made for the club. It's so ridiculous, honestly. I remember Hope or Caulkin saying Howe wasn’t convinced about signing Bruno at the time. He definitely refused Paqueta too. Obviously that doesn’t tell a full story about Howe’s taste in players. Going max long Howe might make more sense if he was our principal competitive advantage, but it is, whatever you think of Howe, Saudi Arabia. We should obviously hedge his failure. What was mentioned at the time regarding Bruno was the concern on how quickly he would settle due to the precarious position the club were in as we were in the bottom three. That was it. Nothing to do with uncertainty of his quality.

If he didn't want Bruno we wouldn't have signed him.
Big Jow
There are far too many stories from too many journalists about this power battle/Howe wanting the most input, for it not to be accurate or at least a slither of truth. Would give him a huge vote of confidence if the club give him that and quite clearly not facing any prospects of the sack if true. Would either work fantastically and Howe will be here in 20 years picking up our quadruple or he’ll be canned next season and we’ll be starting the whole project from scratch.
