Difference being Pope is actually good whereas Longstaff is actually bad.

Unbelievable and underrated goalkeeper in my opinion.

Might be the best I’ve seen at NUFC (not a long list, mind).  His only big weakness is one he shares with the other first rate keeper we’ve had in my time (Given) - distribution.  If Pope had that in his game, I reckon he’d be one of the two or three best in the league.

The great

  • 5 clean sheets in 7 (1st in the PL)
  • 3.29 defensive actions outside the penalty area/90 (1st by a wide margin and higher than normal for Pope)
  • 19% of crosses stopped (1st, also by a wide margin)
  • 17.8 yard avg. distance of all defensive actions (3rd highest behind Arsenal and Everton)

The good

  • +1.1 post shot expected goals plus/minus (6th)
    • The best thing here is that we're second in the league in post shot expected goals (Arsenal first). We just aren't conceding a lot of good chances.
  • 51 throws (1st; putting this in good as it's a nice way to avoid his feet)

The bad

  • 19% launched pass (over 40 yards) completion percentage (dead last; Pickford first at 39% for reference)
  • 157 passes attempted (third fewest)
  • 67% of goal kicks launched (over 40 yards) (5th most) and

No brainer to extend.

From our end obviously, but a lot of players would be wanting 3 years or more to safeguard their future. He must really be committed here, he would have had no problem getting a longer contract somewhere else.

Probably, but I’d guess wherever he went (assuming it was to be No.1), it would be a step down.

Given the career he’s had, he’s probably absolutely buzzing to be playing in cup finals and CL.
