I'm fairly sure this is one of the issues Man City are in bother for with Roberto Mancini.

It seems fairly straightforward on paper. You offer Isak a ridiculous amount of money for his image rights in the MENA region and he does a few campaigns to justify it. I sense the bastions of morality that are the other top six clubs would quickly flag that though (apart from Man City perhaps).

It's too complicated a situation to ever know what's truly going on. To that end, the transfer window represents respite for us as supporters because up until that point his future remains unclear.

I like that

I don’t particularly believe Alex does care, knowing how much he loves it here… his agents will care though.

I know he can play for any of those clubs, but my point is that he most likely will anyway next summer, so why more than double his wages now? 🤷‍♂️ Just to appease his agent for a year?

Of course he cares man come off. Please find me a person who is happy to be paid less than half of what peers of similar ability are getting when they have the option to get the same.

Your not appeasing his agent, your paying him correctly and increasing your chances of keeping him.

If it's ordained he's going next season no matter what then it's whatever.

No one cares about his agent, but it would give us a happy Isak for a year. Presumably it would be an extended contract, so unless a club coughs up £150m he would be here for the rest of it.

Let’s see. I’m not against giving him a new contract like… I just don’t particularly think it’s urgent.

But I’ll say it again… “Alex Crook believes”.

He's good enough to get 300k from those 7-8 monster clubs, that's the problem.

He is but the circumstances have to align. They have to have a gap for a central striker, they have to have the money, they have to choose him over other options, he has to want that move etc.

It’s not so simple as just matching what Paris could pay him.

Not to say he isn't brilliant, but that's probably more to do with the cliff-face like drop off to last season's alternatives.

Yes, we won plenty without him the season before he came.

Our most important player, but at the end of the day just a player. Our success doesn't live or die depending on him.

If the 300k thing is true we are backed into a corner. Likely not a great one.

We cant afford to pay it and if we do? Bruno, Tonali, Botman, Gordon and everyone else's agents will be on the phone and at the clubs door demanding similar wage increases.

We can keep him another year but our resolve is going to be seriously tested this window with clubs bidding around that 120-140m mark.

Hope we have a list of replacements ready and also hope when he does go its to a club outside the PL.

We‘ll agree to disagree on this one.

Players are just people. Most of them are already massively aware of how stupidly lucky they are. Most of the NUFC players that I’ve gotten to know (some better than others) over the last few years are very humble, down to earth, understand the privilege of the position and the privilege of playing for a club like ours.

Once they hit a level of earning top end PL wages, I don’t believe that “give me more money” enters their heads at all really. They want to play for good managers, good crowds, with good players and friends, and have the chance to win trophies.

In my opinion, if you were to list out reasons why Alex would be attracted to a move to Real, Barca, PSG, or even Liverpool, the money aspect would be the bottom of the list to him.

Agents on the other hand… all of them that I know and speak to… they are money men. That’s literally their entire purpose for existing.

If he's smart he realises it's a no-brainer for him. He can double his money for 12 months and leave next summer if he wants to. We aren't letting him leave this season regardless, so what's not to like? The alternative is to sit in the huff for 12 months on the same wage as he is currently on.

If he sits in  a huff then make him stay the remaining 3. I'd rather see the team struggle on the pitch than let players dictate like that. Contracts work both ways and players ought to remember that.

For those that crack on about players having short careers, I have some sympathy for those down the ladder who might not be able to pay the mortgage if their contract doesnt get picked up or are injured out the game, less so those who could leave the game tomorrow as multi millionaires if they received a career ending injury.

One very good reason would be any new contract will add years on since we aren't giving him a new 300k contract on the same length of deal, and so circa 6-7m per year more would be amazing for us given the amount it adds to his transfer value.

However, all the other top guys like Tonali, Bruno etc agents will be banging on the door wanting payrises to get some kind of parity since I believe they're all on similar amounts now, and whilst obviously they wouldn't be getting the same amount, they'll very likely want any extra 50k per week, same as new incomings, and then it's a problem, not to mention the 3 letter word factor everyone's sick of!

But if we literally can’t afford to? Then what? I’m sure if there was no issues with PSR etc, we’d already be offering those kind of wages.

Around £15,7m per year? I understand the problems with the wage structure inside the club. Technically speaking I think we can afford it. Problem would ofcourse be what we would then need to offer other players.

Because it means an entirely new ceiling, one that Tonali, Bruno, and other new signings would want to be closer to.

So he's staying then?

As I said I see the problem with wage structure. I just didn't know what you meant by "literally".

Well if he leaves for RM/Barca/etc it's a "prestige" move - meaning of course no insult to our own standing within the game, but let's be realistic - and the pay is just expected to be outlandish as a matter of principle, not the primary driver.

The issue with "He could get £300k/week somewhere else" is that we'd have to sell him first. He holds a lot of the cards, but not all of them.

He could go nuclear, hand in a transfer request, refuse to train, whatever, but so could the club. He could get 3x the salary elsewhere? Great, you can wait for three years to find out.

I'm not for a moment suggesting either of those things should/will happen but contracts work both ways - he could break his leg, go completely off the boil, a new superstar could emerge & suddenly the security of £150-200k/week for the next however many years at NUFC seems like he's got a good deal.

Personally I think he'll get a substantial rise, not near £300k mind, and there'll be a nine-figure release clause active from next summer in there. If those clubs lining up to give him £300k+ want to make a move, there's a fee in black and white. Keep banging the goals in and there'll be a queue of clubs lining up.
