This post is literally just the point I was trying to make, so who’s straw manning? Most people liked Pardew when he finished fifth. And then we turned on him quickly when he turned out to be a fraud. If everyone agrees, great.

I never liked Pardew, but I was reasonably sympathetic to him at first - I agreed with KK's take at the time - that the rot was at the very top, and Pardew was just a mediocre manager (my words, not KK's) trying to do a difficult job:

The problem was once the form took a nosedive in 12/13, the bullshit excuses and blaming everyone but himself and Ashley began.  The man was a spineless yes-man.

I agree with this sentiment. The honesty and integrity that we feel with Howe, sir Bobby, Hughton, etc just goes a long way.

100% - all of them had it.  I'd add KK to that mix.  Ardiles, who wasn't a particularly good manager, had integrity.  Gullit, who was a shite manager, also had it.  Pardew, Bruce, Souness - I only include permanent managers - lacked it completely; I'd argue that Dalglish was almost as spineless (dedicating the 1998 FAC SF win to Douglas Hall and Freddie Shepherd after their NOTW expose was a low for him), but didn't lack integrity like those three.

We finished fifth under Pardew. FIFTH. We all loved him almost as much as we love Eddie now for like half a year. I know we all want to forget it now, but it happened.

Equally amazing is how he managed to lose all of that goodwill within less than a season after.

Bit like PIF (depending how next few months go).

Aghehowa or Muani+ Wissa for Isak would be good business at this stage. It will be tough but it is what we should aim for.

Thiaw solves CB issue.

And the we need a good CM. Many good ones out there.

Its not impossible to finish the window on a "high"...(Isak aside)

Can we blame some of our ineffective transfer window on this prick taking up so much time an energy? It was shit before he threw his toys out I guess, but you don't know how long it's been going on behind the scenes.

It might have been rumbling on for a while.

Trying to find two strikers, including a top tier prospect, has been more difficult than just getting a Wilson replacement in. I do blame the snake in part.

There is no such thing as 5th in spite of a manager man

What happened after exposed that he was a terrible manager who just happened to get unbelievably lucky, but he still made the correct tactical decisions that season. Even if he made them by mistake.
