I think the 'They can't stop him' refers to him joining up with Sweden, not leaving us for Liverpool. That's how I took it anyway, when he comments on needing previous six weeks, etc. i.e. being ready for Sweden.

Yes, that is what it means. Newcastle are not allowed to stop international call up, but it has nothing to do with his transfer.

Debatable but noone was talking about a club stopping an international call up. Nonetheless - ridiculous calling him a professional in this situation

I did google this earlier in the week, and found an article, but seemed to mention Covid so think it may have been from that time.

It suggested that if clubs prevented players joining up with National teams, they could face FIFA sanctions. However the more likely route would be the standard thing, where the player could not play for his club team within a certain timeframe of the National team fixture(s).

i.e. so you cant just say a player is injured or don't want him to go, then play him in your next fixture.

Again, this may have changed since covid and things getting back to 'normal'.

Scandinavian NT coaches does this all the time. Normally its them urging so and so to find a new club in order to get regular football if they want to be considered for a call-up. It's just getting noticed because of the calibre of the player.

That article doesn't show what was the question. 

Was he asked: 
1. Can Newcastle stop him from going to Liverpool
2. Can Newcastle stop him from going to International duty

Why would they ask no 1 from Swedish National team manager?
