I think the shots are mostly fine?

 

There's a couple of fluffed / skied efforts, but every player has those. I'm sure 15 Shearer shots would include some shit ones. And Isak was never great at headers.

 

Mostly though the shots were hard and heading goalbound. If he'd rolled them tamely wide, fair enough, but they were mostly hit with power and hit well.

 

The problem for me isn't his shooting, but how he carried himself around the pitch adn how he created (or didn't create) space to receive the ball or make shots. Or close people down. I'd love to see metrics like %time sprinting, number of tackles etc that indicate effort, and those stats do exist, for when he had his purple patch vs the last couple of months of the season. That would be far more telling to me and would (possibly) show a drop off in effort if he'd mentally thrown the towel in by then.

Does "application" mean launching himself into a ridiculous tackle which was only going to end one way when he knew fine well we had a bare bones striking department?

 

Remember when Bruno managed to walk the yellow card ban tightrope for about eight matches when we were short handed in midfield? That's the balance between putting in effort, but having a controlled aggression that Gordon could do with learning whilst he spends yet another 3 game stretch in the cooler.

Happy this cunt is gone. Feel like we've got a deeper and more balanced squad now. We were too dependent on one player who was regularly injured or went completely missing like he did end of last season.
