The demand for VAR in the first place was because blatant mistakes happened all the time.

But you still get mistakes week in week out? So what real difference has it made?

It revealed the culture the refs have.

Not interested in enforcing the rules, especially if it 'embarrasses their mate'.

Yeah, there are still bollocks dropped, but some at least are rectified.

The big problem is that so many decisions come down to 'the opinion of the referee', which leaves plenty of scope for face saving.

VAR as a concept is fine. It catches loads of offsides, for example - in terms of the technology.

The problem, as with most technology, is when you introduce humans into it. That's when you get five minute long pauses after a goal whilst they pore over what is on their screens.

Other countries seem to do it really well, from the admittedly limited amount of non English football i watch.

It just seems in this country we can't get to grips with it.

I've written this hundreds of times but having the ref go to screen automatically after every red and penalty would be such an easy fix for VAR. Let the on-pitch referee make the decision based on what he sees on the replays. Would take away the biggest problem right now which are the 'clear and obvious' and 'is this bad enough mistake to overturn' controversies and guessing by VAR. Wouldn't delay the match either when it always takes minutes for the match to continue after a red or a penalty call.

Same with the potentially missed penalty calls, VAR tells ref to take another look and the on-pitch referee makes the call based on what he sees. Leads to more consistent calls too when every ref would hopefully keep their decisions consistent.

Douglas Luiz has given a pen away within 10 seconds of coming on

Free kick, red card for keeper, penalty and goal in the same situation. No luck :)
