Jack14Bojangles
Villa's individual class is simply too good for Freiburg. The Germans need to rely on a cohesive team performance—something, however, they aren't managing particularly well today.
Paully
So if Man City beat Villa and Liverpool beat Brentford both at home then 6th gets in the CL next season
Yorkie
Genuinely not remotely bitter. Congratulations to them; they're doing well as a club and fair fucks for putting some silverware in the cabinet during this very positive era for them. But they can honestly have it; this competition has been undermined to the point it doesn't resemble anything like it's previous iterations. Was always top of my bucket list to win but that's gone now.

Long memories of seeing us knocked out of that competition when I was a kid, I remember being absolutely gutted albeit back then it was a ‘bigger trophy’. Villa will be on top of the world tonight, as would you and I if it was us. It's not the same competition anymore though. It's the Papa Johns UEFA Cup these days. I don’t think that will matter to Villa fans tonight And while I do agree to an extent, it’s definitely not been as watered down as some would have you believe (especially on here tonight ) Edited May 20 by Nine
Donut
Why is the Europa League not the same anymore?

But I look back at our cup win and the teams we had to get through to especially in the latter stages- it made the win that much sweeter. This feels a bit hollow to me from the outside. Same as with Chelsea winning the Conference - it'd be a massive failure if they didn't win it.

I used to love the UEFA Cup/Europa League pre format change. It had such an allure and it was a dream to see us win it one day. Not anymore. I'd celebrate it but it would feel hollow. Tsunami
This is Villa who complained to the PGMOL after the last game of last season when they failed to qualify for the Champs League and we did; right? Turned out canny for them, they should be thanking us.

Big Geordie
I've not no real ill will for Villa, with regards to tonight. We had our 'turn', last year and we will get one again soon - am sure.
The Prophet
Fair fucks to Villa, but the dominance of English teams in the EL and EC should rightfully set alarm bells ringing across Europe.

I understand your point, like I said I agree to an extent. This isn’t the same competition as the one we experienced 20 something years ago, or even the season with Pardew. I think hollow is an overstatement though, I think if we were in that final tonight it would feel bigger than you expected it would.
ponsaelius
There's more teams in the CL now than before for starters and none of them drop into the EL like they used to. Even the introduction of the Conference League has spread things more thinly. Edited May 20 by ponsaelius

Come to think of it, if it's just a case of putting something else in the cabinet, I'd probably rather win the Conference League. It's undoubtedly the lowest in the hierarchy, but it doesn't have any real history or had it's prestige ripped away, like the current Europa League. Winning the Europa League now, after those profound heartbreaks from my childhood, would feel a bit "not how I pictured it..." Anyway, well done Villa. Perhaps, but the weight a trophy possesses is in large part defined by the opposition required to overcome to win it. The best team Villa have faced all the way through is Nottingham Forest. It's hardly soaked in glory in the way that any meaningful trophy is. To win the league cup for instance, you're likely having to beat 2 of the best sides in the world. Leemond
Villa should be down to 9 men. Crazy how often horrific officiating is changing the course of games recently.
Ikon
Doubt we’d hear as much downplaying (kind of) about the EL if we were winning it Same when it comes to Iraola. I hear people having to say that he only has one competition. Let’s see until he has Europe too… blah blah.. Edited May 20 by Ikon
