That's right, if we beat Brighton and Chelsea we'd be on 68.

 

Chelsea could get a maximum of 67 (draw vs Liverpool, win the last two) and Villa a maximum of 67 with three wins and a draw.

It’s already proved a worth while gamble. Gave them a real tilt in the CL, Cup and League.

They'd have got through Club Bruges with. I extra signings. CL qualification in the balance. Don't think it's worked out as well as expected on paper.

Gave them a ‘tilt’, which unless they manage to qualify for CL, has effectively resulted in no material gain.

 

I don’t blame them for giving it a go, you can argue it’s to be applauded, but unless they make CL, it hasn’t been a successful gamble.

Without the signings, we wouldn't be concerned about Villa at all. They wouldn't be in the chase.

 

If they get into CL or Europa*, it's because of the signings.

Man City and Forest are probably going to hit 70 points looking at the games they have left . Villa I can see getting at least another 10 which puts them on 67 but if they do win at Bournemouth we need 69.

 

I think Chelsea win the two home games against Liverpool and Man United but as long as we beat them we will finish above them . 6 points should probably be enough really provided we beat Chelsea but 7 will almost certainly be enough .

Depends if they make CL at the end of the day. If they don't, I think it will have been considered an expensive punt.

Chelsea are a difficult team to predict. They haven't played well this season, but they still have around the same points as us. It's a squad full of expensive players, I am always wary of teams like that, because on the day everything can just click and what looks like a win ends up being a draw, or something we don't even want to contemplate. I think we'll win, but it's a dangerous fixture.

I think that many teams on 70 would be by far the highest score ever needed.

Different circumstances mind, Liverpool that season were nowhere near the level of those seasons first 25-30 games. They'd lost 9 games before the run-in.

Due to injuries and VVD not being right after his ACL mainly, but it was the experience and mentality of them knowing what needed to be done that made them very dangerous. They still ended up winning 7 and drawing 3 of the last 10 so we had to be on it.

I think everyone agrees we need at least 68 points on the board this sesson to be in with a good shout. It's by far the most important factor here, as opposed to what other teams could and should do.

It feels a bit strange to as a Newcastle fan to have full confidence in the management and players to deal with the pressure and achieve top 5, rounding off what will have been an incredible season, especially so when you think of the lack of transfers to help with such a push. But that's where I'm at.

looking back on their fixtures I’m not sure how much these signings have given them, the games they’ve won by large you’d have expected them to win with the pre Jan team

What I posted is a huge part of the same context tbf. If the context was that that Liverpool side under Klopp had no form for going on mad runs, it would never have been a concern.

 

Very different with nigh on every other team though, so don't think it applies at all this season with any team, not least because Villa have already just lost.
