Financial Fair Play / Profit & Sustainability - New APT Rules Approved by Premier League

Recommended Posts

Nick De Marco KC writes this in his overview of the Football Regulator proposals:

the existing financial rules are justified on sustainability and not competition grounds, and in many respect can be seen as anti-competitive, where they discourage investment and re-enforce the status quo in terms of bigger established clubs against others.

Who has hired him, is it City or are we part of a working group attempting to dismantle the current financial "status quo"?

Who are the vampires?

FIFA, UEFA, respective FAs, the big wigs that own clubs and the television.

The working man's game is anything but.

Businessmen and corrupt officials screwing the working man for their every last pennies to see their respective teams play, and folk lapping it up because that's their main source of "letting loose" at a weekend (which is absolutely fair and understandable).

Not sure, but if someone told me that Richard Masters had been caught balls deep in De Marco’s lass whilst wearing a Tottenham football strip and De Marco was now on a vendetta to destroy Masters and the PL cartel, then I’d 100% believe them

Not just the PL - European football too. Was discussing with my dad, yesterday - told him that Real Madrid battered Bayern 4-1 on Weds night, and neither of us really batted an eyelid. Such a game should be a knockout one with real jeopardy - not this meaningless league shite. People are and will switch off.

I haven't bothered watching a champions league game after the first round I don't think. What do they matter?

If you're a Villa fan for this season that might be different so I don't mean to do it down, but for anyone remotely neutral it's just games for games sake, with the same teams likely to get into the knockout rounds. So I won't bother to watch those either, except maybe for the final. And I'll probably not be bothered about who wins that.

There must be a different type of viewer and a big market though, no? Of course fans of individual clubs won’t care as much about the CL when they aren’t in it.

A wider global audience who have been fed the so called top clubs on footy games, twitter and merchandise.

These corporate banks have probably looked at it and thought they can create a European football style, NFL franchise model to sell to this wider audience.  However it will be soulless and empty of emotion.

I suppose the money might be coming in but after that?

Which Global audience? Any one East of Middle East and Champions League is on too late.

America and that's people finishing work at best on the East Coast, West Coast would be too early.

Is it mainly Basically Africa and Europe who watch the matches?

Not sure where to put this but I was sat during the game yesterday thinking we are in a awful FFP situation and yet spent £150m in Summer 2023 on four players (Tonali, Barnes, Hall and Livramento) who have barely improved the first XI. Tonali is better than Longstaff clearly but not exactly setting the world on fire, Barnes doesn't get into first XI with Gordon fit, and Hall & Livramento are both still raw and neither look like £30m+ full backs today. Don't want to be all doom and gloom but the more I think about it, the more that window is the route of our problems.

No - THIS window just gone is the issue. Last summer was still decent in terms of calibre of player and future proofing positions.

This summer, we could have had Marmadshvilli as 1st choice - got Vlad as a 3rd choice instead
We could have had Chiesa for 10m.
We could have kept Minteh and Anderson.
We could have had Simikan for 35m instead of Guehi.
We could have gotten Tosin if we acted quicker and more aggressive.
We didn't get Olise, but could have gotten Madueke had we acted quicker

We could have sold Wilson, Almiron, Trippier, Longstaff, Targett
We didn't get a better striker than Osula.

We didn't get an athletic DM.

This summer was a major flop.

The beginning of the end was actually Man U winning the FA cup because if we had Europe to contend with, we would have been much more aggressive early on I would have thought.

A lot of those players were never going to come here because the likes of Liverpool or Chelsea were also in for them. Madueke was definitely a chance missed though.

This is written as if there’s no financial restrictions. We spent everything we could and more in summer 2023. It’s largely the reason for everything that has happened since.

Ridiculous amount of assumptions.

This is exactly the point I'm making. We couldn't do Olise, Madueke, Tosin etc. or keep Minteh and Anderson precisely because we overspent in Summer 2023 - on players who, as it stands, were not worth mortgaging our future for.

Maybe we decided to bulk the squad up at the expense of the first team, apart from Tonali, for Champions League football which I fully understand.

Maybe it's not about these specific examples, but I'm not convinced we could have got any of those. Olise is too good and Bayern wanted him, Madueke wasn't for sale, Tosin chose money and an easy life.

He’s right of course - we can’t break in under the current circumstances. There is no ‘natural’ growth route to catch those teams.

The only avenue available which PSR etc doesn’t touch is a new stadium.
