Why couldn't this area be used to house away fans? I remember Arsenal taking that section when they had a bigger allocation in the 00's for an FA cup game.

Might be going mental but I'm sure it used to be there for a season or so.

Away fans were also put in the Gallowgate 93/94 iirc when they started building the stand.  Remember Blackburn fans being in the corner when we drew with them 1-1 and Shearer came off the bench to get the equaliser.

One of my first ever games was Dec 93, Leeds under the lights on a weeknight a few days before Xmas. Away fans were in the Strawbery corner. Was lively, to say the least.

Parents had zero interest in football so I couldn’t go to matches until I was old enough to tag along with a mate and this was one of my early forays.

Absolutely mega for a young teen stood in the Milburn / Gallowgate paddock watching all the radgies. An experience more addictive than tooting crack rocks.

Was a midweek League Cup game. Level 7 was closed and they were put in that corner and also overflowed around into the Leazes. 3,400 fans they brought I think.

Correct. Since the PL era away fans were first given the Strawberry Corner, then the NE Corner when the Gallowgate was developed and then the NW Corner during the 1999 redevelopment. They were then put in the Level 7 Corner and then where they currently are now.

Nah it was an FA cup game in march 2002 on a Saturday afternoon. They had upper and lower corner IIRC.

Away fans Gallowgate corner Aug93-Jan94

No away fans except cup Jan94-May94 (apart from comps in the bit between the 'benches' and the Leazes end by the bottom entrance beneath the East Stand

Away fans East-Stand/Leazes corner Aug94-1999

Then in the Milburn/Leazes corner until the extension was completed.

Was the 1-1 Robert game.  Man City had the same allocation the previous round.

Aye but we played them in a League Cup game where they only had the Lower NW Corner as Level 7 was unused.

Wasn't at that so cant say.  Sounds right though, Stoke were put there for the same reasons for that cup game.

Its just reminded me of when they used to dot away fans all over the ground - both corners at the end of the East Stand and in the Milburn Paddock (that Liverpool couldn't sell out but Blackburn, Hull and Charlton did). You'd think that would help the atmosphere but it really didn't.

One thing I do remember is the last season before the extension was finished when the away fans were moved to the Milburn/Leazes corner. Just by their being there, a sort of quasi singing bit took off in the section of the Milburn next to them. Was a bit of chanting back and forwards and it looked like decent fun. This is the reason I would be firmly in favour of shifting the away fans lower.

Isn't that funny. I was definitely there that night but could have sworn I was actually in Level 7!

Probably getting mixed up with the FA Cup game like the rest of us

Sunderland away was better when we’re in the lower bowl, they’d have signing sections right next to us which was good for a bit of back and forth.

That Northern-most section of the Milburn stand used to be class until John Hall disbanded it for the Platinum Club/Bond Scheme.

It was filled with the older, more affluent radgepackets.

Aligning with most of my related decision-making around that time, for some reason I thought it might be good to take a lass I fancied at uni to that one. It was awful, I was awful and thus concluded that sorry little romantic conquest.

My word, what a team

Progressive fullbacks with top ability on the ball, a brick wall of a midfield with pace to burn. A forward line dripping with goals and technical ability. Might be rose-tinted glasses but those were the days. You wouldn’t get a player like Perch or Kadar play in at Newcastle nowadays, more’s the pity
