Sunderlands first season in the PL for years, chance to go 2nd, night time game....all the ingredients for an electric atmosphere and yet it was like a morgue. I'm not expecting much tonight tbh. Thought the Barca and Benfica atmospheres were both pretty average, although I was up in L7 v Barca and the atmosphere always sounds shite from up there. Yep it was really flat Sunderland Everton. it's definitely getting worse , been to a few championship games over last few years with work and one thing is nice to see is due to not selling out a lot of young lads getting tickets together and standing in one end. You do feel prem is becoming more Americanised year on year. However other clubs are at least adding Safe standing, even Brighton latest to announce it, we have to do the same. Safe standing would definitely help but I don't think it would provide any sort of quick fix. The problem is the people that go these days. Unless you're in the corner just take a look around you tonight and you'll see exactly what I mean. The demographic of the crowd has changed dramatically over the last 25 years. It's a very aged crowd these days. Average age must be around 50. With all due respect, and there's a few exceptions, these people aren't traditionally the type who'll be getting all radged up and singing their hearts out. There's very few young fans coming through. They just can't get in.

Yep, PL atmospheres have been generally getting worse for years, probably not surprising given the increase in tourists going to games and the average age of matchgoers increasing. It's become unaffordable for young radgies and that situation is only going to get worse

Thought the Barca and Benfica atmospheres were both pretty average, although I was up in L7 v Barca and the atmosphere always sounds shite from up there. Roy Keane called the atmosphere issue with his prawn sandwich comments literally decades ago now. It's been on an endless diminishing run for popular and successful clubs since then. Times have changed at the top levels, and gate receipts are less of an issue than they've ever been, so pricing out your supporters and replacing them with spectators made the change in atmosphere inevitable I suppose. It's not for me to judge like, if people want to pay to go and sit in silence and the clubs are happy to facilitate that as long as they get their telly money, then it's up to them. Can't help but think an old fashioned bearpit atmosphere created by a younger crowd paying a tenner to get in would look and sound better on the telly, though. Hovagod
I don't know what people imagine the corner is, but it's pretty much a bunch of old white blokes singing crap chants. It's not really the way forward as far as I can see

It's not really the way forward as far as I can see When I've been in your spot in the corner, there's a group of young-ish lads in the row infront, I reckon they're early 20's. Seem like quite a tight knit little crew and they're always having a laugh and singing. In my experience they're canny, not obnoxious at all and they get on well with the older folk around them. They're noticeable because a group their age stood together, is in the minority. Reminds me of me and my pals, 20-25 years ago. Reminds me of what football used to be like even when it was still in the "modern stadium" era rather than harking back to the 80's and early 90's which was a completely different kettle of fish. I'd like to see loads more of those sort of groups being able to gather together and stand in the ground. They're fairly early in their NUFC journey and they love it and want to get involved in making some noise. Not sure how we get more of that in the ground without it causing ructions amongst the old timers who might have to move seats, but I'd love it if we could. Hovagod
Aye, they're canny to be fair. But the general make-up isn't really for me, to be honest. Heard more racism in there than I did in years in the East stand and Gallowgate

One person in particular near you who does nowt but piss and moan at high volume for the entire game, every game. Yorkie
Mentioned it before but I think it was FIFA 20 that had Get You Down by Sam Fender on the soundtrack and if the sax solo happened to land on the opening cut scene of a Newcastle game, it fuckin' slapped. bobbydazzla
The teams should enter the pitch to the Byker Grove theme tune, but with the shout of BYKER ! replaced by TOON ! and GROVE ! replaced by ARMY ! Then the East Stand WW2 veterans can dust off their shooting skills by firing paintballs at the eyes of the opposition players And Eddie can grow a muzzy and sideys combo like Wor Geoff

Said it on here but I remember being irritated by the atmosphere as far back as 98/99 and talking to a mate about how disappointing it was against Man United that season. Its far from a new or localised thing, its up there with observing Christmas has become commercial. Think a big part of it is every fanbase both expanding and being watered down starting with the Premier League and all-seater stadium by the sort of people that could have but weren't going before and people too young to have come up in the football fan culture of the last century. E.g. almost every one that was at the Portsmouth game in 92 was a passionate supporter, now it won't even be half the crowd. There's just so many reasons for it that are never going to countered. It’s probably come full swing now to where it’s relevant again, but not just limited to games. Arsenal are expanding their stadium on the back of Spurs’ increasing revenue in their new stadium, and will compete with them and Wembley for future events. Man Utd want 100k in theirs with I’m guessing 20k corporate, and I presume they will compete with Man City for events. Match-day income is becoming key again to revenue, it’s one of the reasons why SJP as it is is not working for us.
