Cornah
Probably best us old cunts accept atmosphere as we knew it has vanished, never to return. The Goosebump buzz I’ve felt at places like Hillsbrough , Grimsby and Peterborough will never be experienced by the coked up daftys of today. Got to remember we took 6k to their place in the cup 2 year ago hammered the fuckers and barely raised a murmur.

Seems like we have no real edge to us anymore. Sunderland away never really been a good atmosphere in my memory mind. People are too nervous. Not saying it’s right, but feel there’s an element of truth to that. Only really known it to be good from us over there when we are winning/have scored. That 6k game seemed shocking mind. Sunderland have their bit karaoke at the start and end, very choreographed and shite. Seems like we are going the same way only our lot don’t join in with the karaoke. Aye sure, when you're in the stadium, the flags, pyro and the synchronised jumping knock your socks off for the first minute or so, then they fade into the background to the point I forget they're even there. Leverkusen scored, they didnt cheer, they kept chanting the same shit they'd been chanting for 5 minutes. We got a penalty, they didn't explode with fury at the ref, they kept chanting the same shit they'd been chanting for 5 minutes. We scored, there was no stunned silence for a few seconds followed by a rallying cry, they kept chanting the same shit they'd been chanting for 5 minutes. They scored a late equaliser, there was no "limbs", they kept chanting the same shit they'd been chanting for 5 minutes. The game finished, they didn't applaud, they kept chanting the same shit they'd been chanting for 5 minutes. Give me a crowd that ebbs and flows depending on what happens on the pitch any day of the week and twice on a Sunday, you'll get some dull atmospheres but you'll also get some cauldrons, much better than having a bunch of numpties wearing balaclavas singing from a pre-prepared song sheet I don’t think anyone has said we want Ultras. What we’ve said if is it would be better if we didn’t have tens of thousands of sour faced middle agers and OAP’s who would rather sit in silence or when they do get vocal it’s to grumble negatively about our own players. They were fucking shite today in their cup final, despite reading about them slapping themselves on the back. They sing about 3 lines of an Elvis song and shout ready to go, absolute tinpot felt like losing to a non-league team today in the cup. I wasn’t there today but I’ve always found them to not really get going as a crowd for decent stints. Mind, when they scored it was loud as fuck, particularly when we were at the other end of the ground.
huss9
its all on the club's ticketing policy and the fans who couldnt get loyalty points. maybe they should have left things as they were - lesser of two evils.

PCW1983
The away ticketing is fucked, for all the Champions League games and the twats down the road I know people who have got tickets who had no right to them given they aren’t even season ticket holders. I know someone who spent two days going around German Markets with his lass then took her to the match, she’s been to every European away game so far and doesn’t have a season ticket. The same suspects and bus organisers are still pulling in a shit ton of tickets using multiple season tickets and selling them on to those asking for friends or booking via their busses, it’s a closed shop and that’s bad enough without the introduction of a load of plastic fans. All this is compounded by the weird relationship that’s developed whereby somehow players now get to egg the crowd on, choose the playlist/play order and then turn up to SoL and shake like a shitting dog….you want support, fucking earn it, one tackle doesn’t give the fuckers the right to command a crowd. “Come to the ground early and have chicken and chips”, fuck off man, make it so I can get a pint at half time to top myself up, have a piss and watch the replays, cheeky bastards. Jonas
Taking people at their word re the atmosphere from the two sets of fans. We were debating the size of the derby generally and I'm the camp of its overblown. Think its mythical that the atmosphere's are special - the two games in 2000 stand out to me for the reason that they were. Its not even a knew thing or post prawn-sandwich all-seater thing. Cant think of any notable atmosphere's against them or from them except for the afforementioned. Certainly pre Ashley I doubt if there ever was a season we'd rank the home games against them as the best atmosphere or (albeit hard to not be bias) rank them as the best away support. jack j
I stood behind 5 blokes who probably have about 2000 loyalty points between them. Have seen them at away games since i started going when i was 16/17 and they would have been going long before that They barely made a murmur the whole game even at 0-0 It's easy to blame corporate etc but there are plenty of the above types who don't want to sing anymore. I know for a fact they'd kick right off if anyone dared to ask why they dont...

I will die on the hill that the biggest reason they have nosedived is the fact that tickets no longer get in the hands of daft lads on busses, and instead are legitimately purchased by ordinary season ticket holders that never really bothered with away games until the last few years. The same folk that sit on their hands in silence for 90 minutes at home games Like most things, there's a combination of factors and what you've highlighted there is definitely one. Some odd folk in away ends now that just seem to want everything to be calm and docile. @jack j makes a great point as well which I'll expand upon with my opinion (which may or may not be complete bollocks.) Way I see it is, the daft lads that were in their 30s during the Keegan years or in their 40s in the 00's are all in their 60s now and not far off their 70s. How realistic is it to expect them to sing for 90 minutes? and if they don't, does anyone have the right to tell them not to go anymore given the miles they've put in over the years (including times when others couldn't be arsed.) I don't know what the answer is, but it's part of the problem that will only get worse. I was speaking to someone off this forum post-match yesterday, who I won't tag, but like me sits in the Gallowgate near the corner and he said he's starting to prefer home atmospheres over aways. I don't quite agree, but I see where he is coming from. 10-15 years ago that would have been unthinkable.
Vedder
100% this. Plus we lost a lot of vocal supporters who quit their STs when Rafa left. It’s left the away tickets exclusively to those who kept their STs on under Ashley. This is certainly not a criticism of anyone, but we’ve lost a lot of our most vocal, more invested/emotional hardcore support. It’s still relevant because the club have put nothing in place to bring those fans back or do anything to bring a new generation of fans through. We’re stuck with an aging ST/away crowd who on average are more visibly apathetic when it comes to following NUFC. This is not a slight on their dedication to following the team home and away, that is never is question. But forget recent results, this is my biggest concern about us as a club and our identity. We’ve become the very thing we used to be the opposite of when looking at other clubs. Turn up, sit in silence - rinse and repeat.

The same folk that sit on their hands in silence for 90 minutes at home games This is exactly what happened. You've got loads of middle aged season ticket holders who had years to build up away points but couldn't be arsed pre October 2021 cried because they suddenly decided they wanted to watch the team on the road and the club bent over backwards to accommodate them only for them to replicate their behaviour at SJP around the Country. Meanwhile the daft lads who packed away ends around the Country and made a canny old racket for years previous now can't go.
