Champions League 2023/2024: Group F (Newcastle, Milan, Dortmund, PSG)

Recommended Posts

Getting the ground to PSG levels for this is going to be a hell of a task! If we can get anywhere close to it I'll be happy.

Dortmund won't come here with the same gung-ho attitude that PSG did. This will be alot more nervy. One goal in it.

We hoping PSG do the double over Milan? Would mean that should we do the double over Dortmund we'd have qualified with two games to spare right?

Think if either of them does the double on the other and we do the double over Dortmund that's us through

With the additional benefit of clobbering Italy's chance of getting the 5th Champion's League spot... France aren't really a problem.

Spent the past 5-10 mins trawling through pages and pages trying to find the general Champions League thread [emoji38]. Didn't realise it got renamed to this and thought this one was just created after the groups were drawn.

I'm off for the rest of the week so looking forward to binging as much CL content as I can in the coming days. Galatasaray vs Bayern and Inter vs Salzburg at 5.45pm tomorrow, so will watch the former, and then the Goals Show in the evening, and then Feyenoord vs Lazio at 5.45pm on Wednesday which looks finely poised and hopefully a Minteh sighting, (there's also Barca vs Shakhtar at that time).

Galatasaray getting a result against Bayern would be a big blow to Man Utd.

In two minds about wanting to see us and City be the only teams to get through to the knockout stages, it would really hammer home the point of how much we actually deserve to be there. But then thinking, if all fours clubs do well then there's a higher chance of Premier League getting a 5th spot next season and therefore us being slightly more like to requalify, its 50/50.

More than happy for Man Utd to drop into the Europa but have a decent run to rack up the coefficient points that way.

If the group is looking like this at 10pm tomorrow...

Newcastle 7

PSG 6

Milan 2

Dortmund 1

We're as good as there. Think we'd only need one more win.

There is a very good chance of this being the case and yet it still seems almost impossible to believe.

As long as we're on 7 by Thursday morning I don't really care BUT it would be glorious if PSG and Milan drew, would be great to have a 3 point cushion at top spot and more importantly a 4 point gap to third.

I'd sooner that gap to Milan be at 5. Could be the difference between a win and a draw being needed and just a win.

It would look really rosy, but it could sharp change, especially with 2 tough away fixtures to come, where we may do well to take only a point. If Milan and PSG were to exchange wins, and Milan beat Dortmund at home on GW 5 then it could be PSG 9, Milan 8, and Newcastle 8 heading into that final Milan fixture. If we do win tomorrow then we'll almost certainly at least have it in our own hands going into that final Milan match, but a lot can change, especially when any away point in the group will be hard to come by.

The Newcastle fan of old that's still in me somewhere is terrified of a deflating loss tomorrow. I want to us to qualify way too much now.

Let's put aside how ridiculous the concept is of being deflated by a loss to Dortmund in the Champions fucking League.

It is a bit surreal. I am fully expecting a win tomorrow. I'm looking at oddschecker and the shortest odds for Dortmund is 4/1, some places a bit higher (9/2 at SkyBet), and they are drifting all the time. Most neutrals would expect Newcastle to win. On paper, it is by far the easiest match of the 6, and if you were looking to win at least one match in the group stage then this would clearly be it, and the PSG win only naturally enhances expectation.

It would be a bit disappointing not to win, but that said, they are in the CL every year, have a lot more experience, used to big nights and atmospheres, still one of the biggest sounding names in European football, only lost the title to Bayern on the final day, doing well in the league this year, and all it takes is a mistake by Pope, Lascelles etc. or an early red card due to someone being caught up by the occasion / atmosphere, like a Bruno, and the whole complex of the match, and group, could change quickly.

I do need to change the mindset that we should be on 7 points in 30 or so hours, because it is still Dortmund, we're still Pot 4, and would still need to be very much on our game and play well to get the win. Incredibly exciting though.

If we win tomorrow we pretty much guarantee that we at least go into the last  game v Milan with a shot of qualification. That's why PSG taking as many points from them in these two games as well would be a huge help.

And infinitely better than working out how many games the teams above us are going to lose to prevent us being relegated.

I know it's obviously still pie in the sky,  but I'd be lying if I said I hadn't - in all earnest - contemplated/pictured us actually winning the Champions League. I mean we did just batter PSG.

Imagine that was what ended the trophy drought.
