Sandro Tonali

I’m not sure where this massive problem with Tonali came from. He’s barely got off the ground in his career with us, he’s just getting started.

The team has been struggling but I don’t see him as even part of the problem to any meaningful extent. He’s not playing to his absolute best but that doesn’t mean it’s some sort of disaster.

He’s a top quality player and a much needed replacement for Longstaff. He’s a great addition to the squad and we just need to continue working on the system so that the team as a whole starts playing well.

I’m not sure if people still hold his ban against him or what.

Midfield is a conundrum like, isn’t it. Square pegs in round holes job. I’ve said it before but I like a box midfield. Could accommodate both Joes, Sandro and Bruno in that. Isak and Barnes as two false 9s

It's an absolute joke mind the people booing whenever Tonali Is brought off , happened again on Sunday , you would think he's running the show and being subbed for no reason the way people are going on.

Aye the booing is ridiculous, however it’s frustrating as it seems to be Howe’s go to sub regardless of how he’s playing. Bringing him off in the Brighton home game was particularly frustrating.

Yeah, subbing him against Brighton seemed a bit mental.  He was totally ineffective on Sunday.  So not even that arsed about the sub.

I suppose the argument could be that as the game opens up.  Who has more chance of making something happen on the ball, Longstaff or Tonali?

That said, I'm sure they are looking at the fitness data and there are good reasons he isn't doing a full 90 yet.

I'm not sure why we're shoehorning him into a system that has stopped working rather than creating a new system that gets the best out of our best players?

It’s not really working is it ?

It seems to be working fine when he plays for Italy, 90 minute shifts every time. Maybe the set up there fits him better.

He obviously is a top player based on his time at Milan.  But despite some very promising games for us, for what we have paid.  He spends long spells of games not being involved.

Our midfield is a bit like that at times, though.  So that is more of a system issue, as the same thing happens to Willock and Longstaff.  Bruno has to be involved as all of our play goes through him in the middle of the 3 and Joelinton is always involved as he likes barreling into people

The price tag isn't his fault, either and I think people, myself included, are probably expecting him to be contributing a lot more.  I think/hope he is just still a bit rusty after so long out.

I'd like to see him dictating the play, getting more touches and playing more passes. Think he is a bit wasted running down the channels, he seems to be doing the same role Longstaff does and Sean does that better. Wish Trippier was fit as he seems to play the ball to Tonali where he can then play that killer pass. Also I can't seem to remember him taking any set pieces. Get him on corners and free kicks ffs.

I am honestly in disbelief that he is not staying on all game!

He makes all the right runs, his passing is generally progressive and he tracks back well. The system should be based around him amd Bruno.

If Bi g Joe dropped back in to centre back for a while in a couple of games, why the hell can't we employ him as a holding mid in front of the defence?

Tonali is one of the last players I would be dropping out of the starting eleven

Think he suffers a bit from Bruno being the MAIN MAN. Would still try Tonali playing at 6. He’s got good movement to be available for passes from the defence and I think he looks fairly press proof. He’s got speed if it goes tits up.

It would get in the game more and have the added bonus of allowing our only really creative player, Bruno to play higher up.

It’s not really working for NUFC and Tonali.

Definitely worth a try.  I have concerns about his ball retention in that area. Passing can be loose.

Very small sample size and it was early on in his time here.  But I think he played in the deeper role against City in the cup and I also have someone else in my mind where he played as the '6' (hate that term).  He certainly wasn't press resistant and didn't have the Bruno ability to find space in a phone box, turn and start an attack.

Don't think it would hurt to at least try it at times.  As what we are currently doing isn't particularly effective.

I also agree with @CPL about him taking some set pieces.  They have been the worst we've seen in a long while and he took pretty much all of them for Milan, didn't he?

Thought this for a while.

Is it?  I personally wouldn't want Joelinton playing in a midfield 2.  He already plays some kind of hybrid role and I don't think he is anywhere near good enough on the ball to play more centrally in a deeper 2 man midfield.

Whole squad is such a mess

I might eat my words but I don't think it is. There's one really significant gap (backup CF, because Wilson doesn't count) and two areas where we've got quality issues (RW and CB). Those issues are enough to cause a domino effect of problems but I feel that even one decent signing would've settled things down a bit.

If it becomes clear that Schär is done, Bruno is burned out, Isak wants to leave, Pope's shoulder has buggered him and Tino and Hall aren't what we thought they were going to be - I'll change my view. But there's a lot of ifs there and maybe, we're just a bit out of form. Which happens.
